With smaller needles and A, cast on 33 (37) sts. Knit 1 row (WS). Change to MC and work Garter st (knit every row) until piece measures 1 1/2 (2) inches from beg, end with a WS row. Change to B and work Garter st for 4 rows.

Next row-Eyelet row (RS): *K2tog, yo; rep from * to last st, k1. Work Garter st for 3 rows.

Next row (RS): K 22 (25). Turn.

Next row (WS): P11 (13). Beg with a k row (RS) and working on 11 (13) sts, work 14 (16) rows in St st. Cut yarn. With RS facing, join yarn to beg of last long row worked. Attach yarn to beg of RS row. With RS facing, k first 11 (12) sts at beg of row, pick up and k10 (13) sts up right-hand side of instep, knit across 11 (13) instep sts on needle, pick up and k10 (13) sts down left-hand side of instep, knit rem 11 (12) sts -- 53 (63) sts. Work 11 rows in Garter st.

Row 1 (RS): [K1, k2tog, k21 (26), k2tog] twice, k1 -- 49 (59) sts.

Rows 2, 4, and 6: K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2 tog, k1-35 (45) sts at the end of Row 6.

Row 3: [K1, k2tog, k18 (23), k2tog] twice, k1 -- 43 (53) sts.

Row 5: [K1, k2tog, k15 (20), k2tog] twice, k1 -- 37 (47) sts. Bind off all sts.

Ties (make 2) With smaller needles and C, cast on 66 sts. Bind off all sts.

Sew back and sole seam. Thread ties through eyelets.
