Sizes

6 months: 3 balls MC, 1 ball each A, B, C, D Cardigan chest: 21 inches; hat circumference: 12 inches
12 months: 3 balls MC, 1 ball each A, B, C, D cardigan chest: 23 inches; hat circumference: 14 inches
18 months: 3 balls MC, 1 ball each A, B, C, D Cardigan chest: 24 inches; hat circumference: 16 inches

Prep

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in St st using larger needles. TAKE TIME TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

Seed Stitch (over odd Number of sts: multiple of 2 sts + 1; 1-row pat rep)
Pat row: K1, (p1, k1) across. Rep row for pat.

Seed Stitch (over even Number of sts: multiple of 2 sts; 2-row pat rep)
Row 1: (P1, k1) across.
Row 2: (K1, p1) across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat.

Striped Pattern (multiple of 4 sts + 1; 24-row pat rep) Row 1 (RS): With MC, k2; with A, k1; *with MC, k3; with A, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, with MC, k2. Rows 2-6: With MC, work in St st. Row 7: With MC, k4; with B, k1; *with MC, k3; with B, k1; rep from * to last 4 sts, with MC, k4. Rows 8-12: With MC, work in St st. Row 13: With MC, k2; with C, k1; *with MC, k3; with C, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, with MC, k2. Rows 14-18: With MC, work in St st. Row 19: With MC, k4; with D, k1; *with MC, k3; with D, k1; rep from * to last 4 sts, with MC, k4. Rows 20-24: With MC, work in St st. Rep Rows 1-24 for Striped pat.

Notes: Instructions are written for baby girl with buttons sewn to Left Front. For baby boy, work Right Front first, omitting buttonholes and marking position of buttons along Seed St band. Then work Left Front, creating buttonholes opposite markers and following buttonhole instructions for Right Front.

Cardigan Back

With MC, cast on 53 (57, 61) sts. Work in Seed st for 2 inches. Knit 1 row; purl 1 row. Beg Striped pat and work until piece measures 10 1/2 (11, 12) inches from beg. Bind off all sts.

Left Front

With MC, cast on 31 (35, 39) sts. Work in Seed st for 2 inches. Next row (RS): Knit to last 6 sts; knit last 6 sts in Seed st as est to match previous row. Next row: Work 6 sts in Seed st as est; purl rem sts. Keeping last 6 sts in Seed st for front band, work rem sts in Striped pat until piece measures 8 1/2 (9, 10) inches from beg ending with a RS row.

Shape Neck

Cont in Striped pat, bind off at neck edge, 9 sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts 3 (3, 4) times -- 13 (17, 19) sts. Work until piece measures same as Back; bind off all sts. Mark position of 4 buttons evenly spaced along Seed st band.

Right Front Pocket Lining

With MC, cast on 13 sts. Work in St st for 16 rows. Place sts on holder.

Right Front

Work same as Left Front working 6 Seed sts at beg of RS rows, creating pocket when piece measures 3 1/2 inches from beg at end of a WS row and AT THE SAME TIME creating buttonholes opposite markers, as foll:

Buttonholes

(Worked on Seed st band) Working Seed st as est, work 2 sts, bind off 2 sts, work 2 sts. On next row, cast on 2 sts over bound-off sts of previous row.

Pocket

RS row: Work 6 Seed sts and next 5 sts as established, sl next 13 sts onto holder, k 13 pocket lining sts from holder, finish row. Cont knitting across lining sts for remainder of Right Front, leaving first sts on holder for front of pocket. Cont working same as Left Front, reversing neck shaping. Working on WS, sew Pocket Lining into place.

Sleeve

(Make 2) With MC, cast on 29 (33, 37) sts. Work in Seed st for 1 inch ending with a WS row. Working in Stripe pat inc 1 st at each edge every 5 rows 8 (9, 9) times -- 45 (51, 55) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 6 1/2 (7, 7 1/2) inches. Bind off all sts.

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams.

Collar

With right side facing and MC, pick up and k 61 (63, 65) sts evenly spaced around neck edge (pick up and knit into St sts only; do not pick up and knit into Seed sts). Work in Seed st for 2 inches. Bind off in Seed st.

Pocket Edging

With right side facing and MC, pick up and k 13 sts from holder on Right Front. Work in Seed st for 4 rows. Bind off in Seed st. Sew ends of pocket edging into place.

Sleeve Placement

Mark center of top edge of Sleeve; pin marked center to shoulder seam, then pin entire top edge of Sleeve along Front and Back pieces. Sew Sleeve into place. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

With MC, cast on 61 (71, 81) sts. Work in Seed st for 1 1/2 inches, ending with a RS row. Next row: Purl. Next row: Knit. Next row: Purl. Work Rows 1 -- 19 of Striped pat. Row 20 (WS): Cont with MC only, purl to last 2 sts, p2tog -- 60 (70, 80) sts. Row 21: *K8, k2tog; rep from * across -- 54 (63, 72) sts. Row 22 and all even numbered rows: Purl. Row 23: *K7, k2tog; rep from * across -- 48 (56, 64) sts. Row 25: *K6, k2tog; rep from * across -- 42 (49, 56) sts. Row 27: *K5, k2tog; rep from * across -- 36 (42, 48) sts. Row 29: *K4, k2tog; rep from * across -- 30 (35, 40) sts. Row 31: *K3, k2tog; rep from * across -- 24 (28, 32) sts. Row 32: P2tog across -- 12 (14, 16) sts.

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, pull tightly and fasten off. Use remainder of tail to sew seam. Make four 1-1/2-inch-diameter pom-poms, one each using colors A, B, C, and D. Sew pom-poms to top of Hat.

Pattern Stiches

Seed Stitch (multiple of 2 sts + 1; 1-row pat rep worked over odd number of sts) Pattern row: K1, (pl, k1) across. Rep row for Seed St.

Dot Stitch (worked over 25 sts and 40 rows using MC and color A, B, C, or D-as directed in Instructions) Row 1 (RS): With MC, k across. Row 2: With MC, p across. Row 3: Carrying yarn in back of work, *with MC, k1; with A, k1; rep from * to last st, with MC, k1. Row 4: With MC, purl across.Row 5: With MC, knit across. Row 6: Carrying yarn in front of work, *with A, p1; with MC, p1; rep from * to last st, with CC, p1. Rows 7-36: Rep Rows 1-6 five times. Rows 37-40: Rep Rows 1-4.

Instructions

Bottom Border : With MC, cast on 95 sts. Work in Seed st for 2".

Block Band #1: Row 1 (RS): With MC, work 5 sts in Seed st, place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Letter C Chart across 25 sts, pm, work 5 sts in Seed st, pm, work Row 1 of Dot st across next 25 sts, pm, work 5 sts in Seed st, pm, work Row 1 of Heart Chart across 25 sts, pm, work 5 sts in Seed st. Rows 2-40: Cont working Seed st sections and follow charts, working in St st and using A for Dot st.

Seed St Band: Rows 1-6: With MC, work Seed st across 95 sts.

Block Band #2: Row 1 (RS): With MC, work 5 sts in Seed st, work Row 1 of Dot st across 25 sts, work 5 sts in Seed st, work Row 1 of Letter B Chart across 25 sts, work 5 sts in Seed st,work Row 1 of Dot st across 25 sts, work 5 sts in Seed st. Rows 2-40: Cont working Seed st sections and follow charts (working in St st); use C for first Dot st block and use D for second Dot st block.

Seed St Band: Rows 1-6: With MC, work Seed st across 95 sts.

Block Band #3 Row 1 (RS): With MC, work 5 sts in Seed st, work Row 1 of Heart Chart across 25 sts, work 5 sts in Seed st, work Row 1 of Dot st across 25 sts, work 5 sts in Seed st, work Row 1 of Letter A Chart across 25 sts, work 5 sts in Seed st. Rows 2-40: Cont working Seed st sections and follow Charts; use A for Dot st.

Top Border: With MC, work in Seed st for 2". Bind off all sts.

Finishing:

Make one 1-1/2 inch diameter pom-pom in each of colors A, B, C, and D. Tie a pom-pom to each corner of the blanket.
