Knitted Baby Set

Seed Stitch (over odd Number of sts: multiple of 2 sts + 1; 1-row pat rep)
Pat row: K1, (p1, k1) across. Rep row for pat.

Seed Stitch (over even Number of sts: multiple of 2 sts; 2-row pat rep)
Row 1: (P1, k1) across.
Row 2: (K1, p1) across. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat.

Striped Pattern (multiple of 4 sts + 1; 24-row pat rep) Row 1 (RS): With MC, k2; with A, k1; *with MC, k3; with A, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, with MC, k2. Rows 2-6: With MC, work in St st. Row 7: With MC, k4; with B, k1; *with MC, k3; with B, k1; rep from * to last 4 sts, with MC, k4. Rows 8-12: With MC, work in St st. Row 13: With MC, k2; with C, k1; *with MC, k3; with C, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, with MC, k2. Rows 14-18: With MC, work in St st. Row 19: With MC, k4; with D, k1; *with MC, k3; with D, k1; rep from * to last 4 sts, with MC, k4. Rows 20-24: With MC, work in St st. Rep Rows 1-24 for Striped pat.

Notes: Instructions are written for baby girl with buttons sewn to Left Front. For baby boy, work Right Front first, omitting buttonholes and marking position of buttons along Seed St band. Then work Left Front, creating buttonholes opposite markers and following buttonhole instructions for Right Front.

With MC, cast on 53 (57, 61) sts. Work in Seed st for 2 inches. Knit 1 row; purl 1 row. Beg Striped pat and work until piece measures 10 1/2 (11, 12) inches from beg. Bind off all sts.

With MC, cast on 31 (35, 39) sts. Work in Seed st for 2 inches. Next row (RS): Knit to last 6 sts; knit last 6 sts in Seed st as est to match previous row. Next row: Work 6 sts in Seed st as est; purl rem sts. Keeping last 6 sts in Seed st for front band, work rem sts in Striped pat until piece measures 8 1/2 (9, 10) inches from beg ending with a RS row.

Cont in Striped pat, bind off at neck edge, 9 sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts 3 (3, 4) times -- 13 (17, 19) sts. Work until piece measures same as Back; bind off all sts. Mark position of 4 buttons evenly spaced along Seed st band.

With MC, cast on 13 sts. Work in St st for 16 rows. Place sts on holder.

Work same as Left Front working 6 Seed sts at beg of RS rows, creating pocket when piece measures 3 1/2 inches from beg at end of a WS row and AT THE SAME TIME creating buttonholes opposite markers, as foll:

(Worked on Seed st band) Working Seed st as est, work 2 sts, bind off 2 sts, work 2 sts. On next row, cast on 2 sts over bound-off sts of previous row.

RS row: Work 6 Seed sts and next 5 sts as established, sl next 13 sts onto holder, k 13 pocket lining sts from holder, finish row. Cont knitting across lining sts for remainder of Right Front, leaving first sts on holder for front of pocket. Cont working same as Left Front, reversing neck shaping. Working on WS, sew Pocket Lining into place.

(Make 2) With MC, cast on 29 (33, 37) sts. Work in Seed st for 1 inch ending with a WS row. Working in Stripe pat inc 1 st at each edge every 5 rows 8 (9, 9) times -- 45 (51, 55) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 6 1/2 (7, 7 1/2) inches. Bind off all sts.

Sew shoulder seams.

With right side facing and MC, pick up and k 61 (63, 65) sts evenly spaced around neck edge (pick up and knit into St sts only; do not pick up and knit into Seed sts). Work in Seed st for 2 inches. Bind off in Seed st.

With right side facing and MC, pick up and k 13 sts from holder on Right Front. Work in Seed st for 4 rows. Bind off in Seed st. Sew ends of pocket edging into place.

Mark center of top edge of Sleeve; pin marked center to shoulder seam, then pin entire top edge of Sleeve along Front and Back pieces. Sew Sleeve into place. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
