Lace-Inspired Crocheted Top

Sizes Instructions are written for the smallest size (S) with changes for larger sizes (M, L) given in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.

This is a close-fitting garment at bodice that stretches to fit actual bust measurement of 34 (38, 42) inches. Hips = 35 (40, 45) inches Length = 19 (19-1/2, 20) inches from top of bodice to lower edge. (Length can be adjusted by positioning of straps.)

Yarn
  • Cool Crochet from Bernat (Art. 161074) 70% cotton, 30% nylon; 1-3/4 oz. (50 g); 200 yds. (182 m); DK weight
  • 5 (6, 7) balls #745005 Crisp White
Hook & Extras
  • Size E/4 (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 1 yard of 2-1/2-inches-wide cream silk ribbon
  • Blunt-end yarn needle
Gauge
  • 122 hdc or 11 (dc and ch-1) mesh = 4 inches (10 cm).
  • 16 rows = 5 inches (16 cm) in Petal pat.
  • 7 scallops = 8 inches (20 cm); 14 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in Scallop pat. Take time to check your gauge.
Stitch Abbreviation
  • Sc2tog: Draw up a lp in each of the next 2 sts, yo and draw through all lps on hook.
Special Stitch

3-dc cluster: (yo, insert hook, yo and draw up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook) 3 times in specified st, yo and draw through all lps on hook.

Notes

When working cluster into a previous cluster, you will be reaching back with your hook. Be sure to insert hook from front to back under 2 top lps of previous cluster.

Torso of garment is made in one piece; short ends are joined to form a tube. Bodice is added along one side edge of the tube; lower edging is added at opposite edge of tube. Straps are made separately and sewn in position to desired length.

PETAL PATTERN
Foundation row (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, work hdc in each ch across. Ch2-counts as first hdc of next row; turn. Sk Row 1 and beg to work Row 2. Row 1: Sk first dc, *hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next dc; rep from * across. Ch 2, turn. Row 2: Sk first hdc, hdc in each hdc across. Ch 3 -- counts as first dc of next row, turn. Row 3: Sk first hdc, *work 3-dc cluster in next hdc, ch 3, work 3-dc cluster in top of cluster just made -- (see notes on slide 1), sk next 2 hdc; rep from * across, end 3-dc cluster in next hdc, dc in last hdc -- 17 vertical cluster, 16 horizontal cluster. Ch 3, turn. Row 4: Sk first dc, work 3-dc cluster in top of first cluster, *ch 2, sk next horizontal cluster, 3-dc cluster in next cluster; rep from * across, end dc in 3rd ch of turning ch -- 17 cluster, 16 ch-2 sps. SCALLOP PATTERN
Row 1 (RS): Sc in first st, *sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st -- scallop made; sk 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * across. Ch 3, turn. Row 2: Work 2 dc in first sc, *sc in center dc of next scallop, scallop in next sc; rep from * across, end sc in center dc of next scallop, 3 dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Row 3: Sc in first dc, *scallop in next sc, sc in center dc of next scallop; rep from * across, working last sc in 3rd ch of turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. Rep Rows 2 -- 3 for Scallop pat.

TORSO
Loosely ch 52. Working even on 51 sts, work 14 (16, 18) reps of Petal pat -- 112 (128, 144) rows. With WS tog, join foundation ch edge with last row by working sl st in each st across, working through both pieces at once -- tube and back seam formed.

DRAWSTRING BAND
Rnd 1: With RS facing, join thread with sl st at back seam on one end of Torso tube; work 14 sc along each 8-row rep of Petal pat as foll; 2 sc along Rows 1-2; 5 sc along Rows 3-4; 2 sc along Rows 5-6; 5 sc along Rows 7-8; join with sl st to first sc -- 196 (224, 252) sts. Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc, and at the same time dec 4 (2, 0) sc evenly spaced by working sc2tog, join with sl st to first sc -- 192 (222, 252) sc. Rnd 3: Ch 5 -- counts as first dc and ch-2; sk first 3 sc, *dc in next sc, ch 2, sk next 2 sc; rep from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-5 -- 64 (74, 84) ch-2 sps. Rnd 4: Ch 1, work sc in each dc and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp, join with sl st to first sc -- 192 (222, 252) sc. Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc and at the same time dec (sc2tog) 23 (29, 41) sc evenly spaced around, join with sl st to first sc -- 169 (193, 211) sts.

BODICE
Work back and forth in Scallop pat for 17 (19, 21) rows--28 (32, 35) scallops at end of Row 1. Fasten off. (A back opening will be formed.)

LOWER BORDER
Rnd 1: Work as for Rnd 1 of Drawstring Band, except work in hdc instead of sc -- 196 (224, 252) sts. Rnd 2: Ch 2 -- counts as first hdc; sk first hdc, hdc in each hdc around, join with sl st to first sc. Rnd 3: Ch 4 -- counts as first dc and ch-1 sp; sk first 2 hdc, *dc in next hdc, ch 1, sk next hdc; rep from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4 -- 98 (112, 126) ch-1 sps. Rnd 4: Ch 4, sk first dc, *dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4. Rnds 5-7: Work as for Rnd 4. Rnd 8: Ch 2 -- counts as first hdc; sk first dc, hdc in each ch-1 sp and dc around, skipping 4 (0, 4) hdc evenly spaced around; join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-2--192 (224, 248) hdc. EDGING FOR BACK OPENING
With RS facing, join yarn at top corner of back opening, sl st along first side of opening, sl st along next side of opening, working 6 ch-3 button lps, with the first and last ones at upper and lower edge of back opening with rem 4 lps spaced evenly in bet. Sew buttons in place to correspond to button lps. Try on garment with opening at center back. Position Strap ends on front and back Bodice, adjusting length as desired. Sew Strap ends in place.

DRAWSTRING
Making a chain 55 inches in length. Fasten off. Weave ends through ch-2 sps on drawstring band, so that ends extend at center front. Tie an overhand knot in each end of drawstring.
