  • Soft Boucle from Bernat (Art. 161026) 97% acrylic, 3% polyester; 5 oz. (140 g); 255 yds. (233 m); chunky weight
  • 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) balls #26949 Westport Shades

Hook and Extras

  • Size K/10-1/2 (6.5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Five 1-inch-diameter buttons
  • 2-inch buckle
  • 1 (1-1/4, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 1-1/2) yards of 1-1/2-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon
  • Sewing needle and matching thread
  • Blunt-end yarn needle

Gauge

  • 11 hdc and 7 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) with larger hook. Take time to check your gauge.

Stitch Abbreviation

  • Hdc2tog: (yo, draw up lp in next st) twice; yo, draw through all lps on hook. Note: Ch-2 for turning ch does not count as hdc.

With larger hook, ch 55 (59, 65, 71, 75). Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across--53 (57, 63, 69, 73) hdc; turn. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across; turn. Rep last row twice more.

SHAPE SIDES

Next row (RS): Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each hdc to last 2 hdc, hdc2tog; turn. Work 3 rows even. Rep last 4 rows 3 more times--45 (49, 55, 61, 65) hdc. Cont even until work measures 10 inches, ending with a WS row. Next row: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in each hdc to last hdc, 2 hdc in last hdc; turn. Work 3 rows even. Rep last 4 rows twice more--51 (55, 61, 67, 71) hdc. Cont even until work measures 16-1/2 inches, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Next row: Sl st across first 4 (5, 6, 7, 7) hdc, ch 2, hdc in each hdc across to last 4 (5, 6, 7, 7) hdc; turn. Leave rem sts unworked. Next row: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each hdc to last 2 hdc, hdc2tog; turn. Rep last row 3 (3, 4, 5, 5) more times--35 (37, 39, 41, 54) hdc. Cont even until armhole measures 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) inches long, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE BACK NECK

Next row: Ch 2, hdc in each of first 8 (9, 9, 10, 11) hdc; sk center 19 (19, 21, 21, 23) hdc. Join a 2nd ball to next hdc, ch 2, hdc in same sp, hdc in each of last 7 (8, 8, 9, 10) hdc; turn. Working both sides at the same time, work 1 row even.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Right back
Sl st across first 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) hdc, sc in next hdc, hdc in each of last 3 (4, 4, 4, 5) hdc. Fasten off.

Left back
Ch 2, hdc in each of first 3 (4, 4, 4, 5) hdc, sc in next hdc. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT

With larger hook, ch 31 (33, 36, 39, 41). Work as for Back until 4 rows are completed.

SHAPE SIDE

Next row (RS): Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each hdc to end; turn. Work 3 rows even. Rep last 4 rows 3 more times--25 (27, 30, 33, 35) hdc. Cont even until work measures 10 inches, ending with a WS row. Next row: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in each hdc to end, turn. Work 3 rows even. Rep last 4 rows twice more--28 (30, 33, 36, 38) hdc. SHAPE FRONT NECK

Next row (RS): Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 7 (8, 9, 11, 12) hdc (neck edge); turn Leave rem sts unworked.

SIZES L, 1X and 2X ONLY:
Dec 1 hdc at armhole edge on next (1, 2, 2) rows--(9, 10, 11) hdc.

ALL SIZES:
Cont even until armhole measures 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) inches long, ending with a WS row.

RIGHT FRONT

Work as for Left Front, reversing all shapings and working buttonholes to correspond to button markers as foll: RS row: Ch 2, hdc in each of first 3 hdc, ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in each hdc to end; turn. WS row: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc to last 4 hdc, ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in each of last 3 hdc; turn. Next row: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc and ch-1 sp across; turn.

With larger hook, ch 45 (45, 47, 47, 49). Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across; turn. Row 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in each hdc across to last hdc, 2 hdc in last hdc; turn. Rep last row 3 more times--51 (51, 53, 53, 55) hdc.

SHAPE TOP

Next row (WS): Sl st across first 4 hdc, ch 2, hdc in each of next 16 (16, 17, 17, 18) hdc, (2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc) 5 times, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in each of next 16 (16, 17, 17, 18) hdc; turn. Leave rem 4 hdc unworked--49 (49, 51, 51, 53) hdc. Next row: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in each hdc across to last 2 hdc, hdc2tog; turn. Rep last row 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) more times--31 hdc. Fasten off.

PLEATS

Fold Sleeve in half and mark center at top and bottom edges. On WS, make 1 inch pleat at lower edge and 2 inch pleat at top edge, and stitch for approx 1 inch. Fold pleat flat on WS and sew in position.

Sew shoulder seams.

EDGING

With RS facing and smaller hook, join yarn with sl st at bottom corner of Right Front and work one row of sc evenly up front edge, 3 sc in corner of neck edge, sc evenly around neck edge to opposite corner, 3 sc in corner, and sc evenly down Left Front edge. Fasten off. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Set in Sleeves. Sew on buttons.

BELT (optional)

With larger hook, ch 8. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across--6 hdc; turn. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across; turn. Rep last row until Belt measures 38 (40/42, 44/46) inches. Fasten off. Place ribbon along WS of Belt; trim ribbon, leaving approx 1 inch free at each end. Sew sides of ribbon in position using matching sewing thread and sewing needle. Fold one end of Belt around center of buckle and sew in position. Fold other end of Belt diagonally to WS to form point and sew in position. On WS, mark positions for Belt holes and make small hole through ribbon only; the buckle will easily fit through yarn on RS of Belt.
