How To Dye Paper

Using this easy technique to dye paper for creative craft projects.

Here's how to dye pages from old books to use in craft projects, like this unique and easy wreath. You will need: paper to cover your work space, a cutting mat, some old books, a ruler, a crafts knife, hot water, glass jars, a spoon, two colors of powdered dye, we used Rit dye in purple and denim. A measuring spoon, shallow pans, paper towels, latex gloves, a pressing cloth, and an iron. Cut the book pages along the binding using a metal ruler and a crafts knife. Next, prepare the first dye bath. We used four teaspoons of denim dye, plus two cups of very hot water. [MUSIC] For the other dye bath we used two teaspoons of purple dye and two cups of hot water. Pour each dye mixture into a shallow pan, add more hot water to raise the liquid level if necessary. [MUSIC] Then submerge two or three book pages at at time into each of the dye baths. The longer you leave the pages in the darker they will be. Take the pages out of the dye bath, rinse them in cool water, and lay them on paper towels to dry. Repeat the process with the remaining pages. Vary the soaking time to create a variety of shades. Let the pages dry thoroughly. Place the dried pages one at a time in a pressing cloth, and iron for a few seconds until the page is smooth. [MUSIC]
