Grapevine Swag
1. Using wire cutters or pruning shears, cut the grapevine wreath in half. To help hold the wreath branches together, wrap floral wire around the swag toward each end and in the middle of the arch.
2. Apply hotmelt adhesive to the ends of the dried eucalyptus and other longer dried stems. Insert the stems beginning at the left side of the arch and working out toward the ends of the swag.
3. When the longer stems are in place, begin adding dried flowers until you are pleased with the arrangement. Start with form flowers; add finishing touches with filler flowers.
Note: Arches and swags are created on a variety of bases that include foam, straw, wire, and grapevine. Choose the swag form based on the type of materials you are using.
It is easy to push stems of silk flowers or clusters of silk or dried florals wired to floral picks into foam. But pushing stems of dried florals into foam most likely will break the stems.
A new and slightly different way to create arches or swags is to cut a vine wreath in half. Each half becomes a separate form to make different designs. The delicate flower stems are worked into the weave of the vine and are held in place with hotmelt adhesive. This makes a lighter, more airy finished design and provides a good base for delicate stems.
