Piece of Cake Made with Felt

What You'll Need

  • 4-inch-thick dense upholstery foam
  • 1/2 yard of 52-inch-wide white felt
  • Upholstery spray adhesive
  • Water-soluble marking pen
  • Pinking shears
  • Scraps of felt: pink, peach, light green
  • 1/2-inch-wide pink and gold rickrack
  • Sewing needle
  • Fabrics glue
  • Beads

1. Cut a 7-inch-diameter circle from the upholstery foam, and then cut the circle into quarters.

Using tracing paper and one of the quarter wedges, draw one triangle pattern to fit top of the wedge and a 4-inch-wide band to fit around all three sides of the wedge. Add a 1/4-inch seam allowance to the patterns.

2. For each wedge, cut two triangles and one band from white felt. Machine-sew the short edges of the band together; press the seam open. Pin one triangle to the top of the band, matching the tip of the triangle to the seam line. Sew the pieces together, clip the curve and corners, and turn right side out.

3. Cut additional bands of pink felt and roll into small flowers, hand-tacking at one end as you roll. Cut long leaf shapes from green felt and gather down the center to mimic piped-icing leaves.

4. Referring to the photo, secure the rickrack icing, pleated icing, flowers, and leaves to the cake wedges using fabrics glue. Add beads as desired.
