Easy Handmade Ornaments

Raid your hobby closet and try out these creative ways to transform a clear crafts-store ball ornament into something worth saving (or giving as a gift).

Rub-On Ornament

Use Christmas designs, monograms, or stickers to create an easy and elegant ornament. Apply rub-on transfers to a clear ornament, pressing lightly to be sure your transfers are secure to the ornament.

3/8
Decoupage Ornament

Embellish an ornament by covering it with decoupage glue, then adding bits of punched patterned paper. Brush remaining glue over the ornament and gently smooth to seal the paper. Allow the glue to dry before hanging.

4/8
Patterned Paper Ornament

Cut out strips of your favorite patterned paper and stuff them into a clear ornament. Top with a color-coordinated ribbon for a designer effect.

5/8
Painted Ornament

Wash the inside of your ornament and let dry. Coat the inside with metallic acrylic paint in the color(s) of your choice. Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before adding another (use two or three colors for maximum effect). Then, apply a rub-on sticker and color-coordinated gem to the outside.

Card Stock Ornament

Have an abundance of card stock scraps? Roll scraps and put them in a clear ball for a stunning tree accent. Use rub-on letters to add a cheery thought to the ornament. Top it off with a ribbon hanger.

I think the card stock idea is wonderful! It really intrigued me how beautiful it looked! I am going to try this project next xmas. We are always looking for new ideas with the clear bulbs. I have been doiung this 10 yrs. with my kids, they love looking at the old ones from 10 yrs ago now. It is a family tradition in our home!

You can use tinsel for the inside of the clear bulbs as well. This is a more tedious craft, so young children may find this to difficult. But they are Beautiful when finished with the 2 to 3 different colored tinsels inside. (fill till mostly full looking)

We do our colors at the same time and shake and rtotate the bulb until it gets a nice swirly effect to it. It always comes out different. Then we let them sit upside down until it dries. (Note: takes 2 to 3 weeks sometimes to dry fully; if you hang to soon all the paint will settle at the bottom of the ornament!) Sometimes we do them and then let them sit in the box upside down until the next xmas to hang them.

There are some acrylic ornaments you can use instead of glass which is especially helpful for your kids.
