5 Customized Christmas Stockings, One Pattern

Start with one basic pattern and customize five different Christmas stockings for family and friends.


What You Need:

  • Tracing paper or copier; pencil
  • Scraps of red fabric for stockings
  • Scraps of assorted fabrics (cotton, felt, crushed velour) for cuffs
  • Matching threads
  • One 2x7-inch strip of fabric
  • For embroidered cuff: Red metallic embroidery floss, green embroidery floss, three 6-mm red jingle bells
  • Marking pen
  • For quilted cuff: Red metallic sewing thread
  • For beaded cuff: Assorted decorative glass beads
  • For ribbon cuff: 1-3/4 yards of 2-1/2-inch-wide red satin ribbon
  • For angled cuff: Decorative brooch, button, or large jingle bell

How to Make It:

  1. For each stocking, trace and cut stocking and cuff patterns. Cut two stocking pieces from red fabric. With right sides together, sew stocking pieces along side and lower edges using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Clip curves, turn right side out, and press.
  2. For loop, fold long edges right sides together and stitch using a 1/4-inch seam. Turn right side out. Fold in half with top raw edges even. Place loop inside stocking at top edge, with loop hanging down inside stocking. Baste in place at side edge of stocking.

For ribbon cuff:

If fabric ravels, turn under top raw edge of stocking and stitch across top to hem. Attach hanging loop at side edge and stitch through stocking at side seam. Cut a 13-inch-long piece of ribbon and wrap around top edge of stocking, starting and stopping at the center back of the stocking. Fold under raw edge and overlap over starting end. Stitch through ribbons at fold and at top close to edge and through stocking top. Cut remaining ribbon length into two pieces. Place right side cut edges of ribbons at side seams of stocking 1 inch from the top edge with ribbons extending to the back of the stocking. Stitch along side edges of stocking, close to cut edge of ribbon. Flip ribbons to the front and tie into a bow. Cut bottom edges of ribbon at an angle.

For beaded cuff:

If using felt for cuff, cut one cuff piece from pointed pattern, placing side along fold. With right sides together, sew side seam with a 1/4-inch seam. If using other fabric, cut two pieces to line the cuff. Fold hanging loop in half and place inside stocking at side edge, having top raw edges at top edge of stocking; baste in place. Insert cuff inside stocking with right side of cuff to the wrong side of stocking and having top raw edges even. Stitch top seam in a 3/8-inch seam to attach cuff to stocking. Flip cuff to outside and lightly press top edge. Using two strands of sewing thread or heavy upholstery thread, sew decorative beads at points of cuff.

For embroidered cuff:

Cut two cuff pieces from straight-edge pattern, placing side edges on fold. On one cuff section, mark design to be embroidered. Using four strands red metallic embroidery thread, stitch letters using running stitch. Using two strands green embroidery thread stitch lines of holly leaves using stem outline stitch. Sew jingle bells at leaf centers. With right sides together, stitch side edges of cuff front using 1/4-inch seams. Stitch side edges of cuff lining. With right sides together, place lining tube inside cuff and stitch along lower edge using a1/4-inch seam. Turn right side out and press lower edge. Fold hanging loop in half and place inside stocking at side edge, having top raw edges at top edge of stocking; baste in place. Insert cuff inside stocking, with right side of cuff to the wrong side of stocking and having top raw edges even. Stitch top seam in a 3/8-inch seam to attach cuff to stocking.

For quilted cuff:

Cut two pieces from scalloped edged cuff pattern, placing side edges at fold. With right sides together, stitch side edge of cuff front and side edge of cuff lining, using 1/4-inch seams. With right sides together, place lining tube inside cuff and stitch along lower edge in a 1/4-inch seam. Clip curves; turn right side out and press lower edge. Using metallic sewing thread, machine-quilt free design through both cuff and cuff lining. Fold hanging loop in half and place inside stocking at side edge, having top raw edges at top edge of stocking; baste in place. Insert cuff inside stocking, with right side of cuff to the wrong side of stocking and having top raw edges even. Stitch top in a 3/8-inch seam to attach cuff to stocking.

For angled cuff:

Cut two pieces from angled cuff pattern, placing side edges at fold. With right sides together, stitch side edges of cuff front. Stitch side edges of cuff lining. With right sides together, place lining tube inside cuff and stitch along lower edge in a 1/4-inch seam. Turn right side out and press lower edge. Fold hanging loop in half and place inside stocking at side edge, having top raw edges at top edge of stocking; baste in place. Insert cuff inside stocking, with right side of cuff to the wrong side of stocking and having top raw edges even. Stitch top using a 3/8inch seam to attach cuff to stocking. Using matching thread, take a few large gathering stitches from bottom edge of stocking to top edge at short side of cuff. Pull up stitches to gather where decorative brooch, button, or large jingle bell can be placed.
