The gardening world lost a true friend this past Sunday. Jim Wilson was nothing if not generous—with his time, his spirit, as well as his horticultural encouragement. A native of Mississippi, Jim spent 56 years in the horticultural industry, 10 of them as the host of The Victory Garden on PBS. Jim is also the author of 14 garden books, most recently Homegrown Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs: A Bountiful, Healthful Garden for Lean Times (Creative Homeowner). Jim and I met more than 15 years ago at Park Seed Company in South Carolina. That’s us (above) admiring the sunflowers in the display gardens. We became fast friends as soon as he discovered that I attended journalism school at his alma mater, The University of Missouri at Columbia, where he later moved and gardened with his partner Jamie Lynn Mandel. Even at the age of 85, Jim still maintained a 1,000-square-foot organic garden. That was Jim. A true gardener and a friend to be cherished.
