The best part about this treat is its a 20-minute dessert from start to finish that’s also Valentine’s perfect. It’s simple enough to make and can be prepared the evening prior to serving. To do so, assemble the trifle up until the final layer and then cover and refrigerate it over night. The final layer can be placed on top prior to serving to prevent any shrinking and receding of that layer. The slight receding won’t change the flavor, but if you are like me, you might be slightly particular about finishing touches.
In fact I am so particular I added a few chocolate shavings instead of the cocoa dusting as the recipe calls for since I was out of cocoa powder. I know I could have left it alone and it would have looked fine, but I couldn’t stand for it to be bare.
To finish like the picture, level off the whip cream by pulling a spatula across the top and then sprinkle chocolate shards on top of it. To make the shards melt 2 oz. of chocolate and spread it thinly onto a piece of parchment paper. From there leave it to rest and to harden, then roll the parchment paper and the chocolate will break in shards—perfect for garnishing.
