Colorful Girl’s Rooms

A child’s bedroom space is one of the most fun places to decorate in the home because children will always welcome bright colors and playful patterns. Last year I wrote an article all about color in boy’s rooms so today let’s focus on girl’s rooms, and all the ways to add color to these youthful yet feminine spaces.

I just finished up my own daughter’s room a few months ago in her preferred shades of aqua and lavender, adding layers of pattern and color with fabric, bedding, painted pieces, and accessories. Here’s a peek at twenty favorite feminine spaces from the archives, and five different ways to add color to a special little girl’s room in your home.

Add Color With Paint.   Tried and true, a coat of paint on the walls is the easiest way to add a lovely shade of color to a girl’s room, choose a soft pastel or a vibrant hue to set the palette for the space.

Add Color With Bedding.  Floral motifs always complement a girlish space and will pair perfectly with stripes and polka dots too.

Add Color With Window Treatments. Whether you choose classic window panels or a roman shade, the window is another opportunity to use fabric to inject bright color or pretty pattern into a girl’s room.

Add Color With Painted Furniture.  Introducing a painted piece of furniture into a girl’s room in the form of a dresser, a desk, her bed, or accent chairs is a playful way to introduce a bright or subtle shade of blue, green, pink, purple, green, or yellow.

Add Color With Accessories.  If you refrain from painting the walls, no worries. White or neutral walls are a perfect backdrop for adding color with all the extras: a rug, a lamp, bins for storage, decorative pillows, even extra seating.

  1. Such great inspiration! I am in the throws of my teen girls room makeover and this gives me great motivation!

  2. These are BEAU-TI-FUL!! Love a good mix of colour. We too just finished our daughters first “big girl room”…

  3. Gorgeous and fun rooms! But sadly I have a little boy. Can you also do an article on little boy(toddler) rooms? Thank you!!!

  4. I LOVE the color on the walls in the second bedroom. We are about to move and need to paint our girls’ room – any idea what paint this is?

I’d also love thoughts from anyone on what color to paint the adjoining playroom if we go with this color in the girls’ bedroom. Thanks!!!

  5. I’m working on my daughter’s big girl room and was inspired by the raspberry Jenny Lind bed from Land of Nod. I found a Jenny Lind-ish style bed for $50 and painted it Krylon’s Mambo Pink. I just found the perfect quilt ( ) for $40 at TJ Maxx. We’re keeping her walls white but I also plan on adding colors elsewhere so this post was right up my alley!

  6. Love these rooms and tips! So many great ideas!!! To the persons comment above…I’d go with a gray or white adjoining playroom carrying some of the bedroom colors in.

  7. Where can I get the duvet in the 6th picture? I love it.

  8. Where can I purchase the 2 bunk bed sets pictured in the 13th/14th pic?? Love them!
