Mixing It Up: Desks + Chairs

A few months ago I wrote about how modern stylish dining rooms are not made from a matched set anymore, rather they are decorated with the deliberate pairing of mismatched pieces.

The same principle applies to desks and chairs that form mini home offices in various spaces around the home.  Purposefully combining two pieces that have different finishes or styles is a fresh way to approach decorating your home office, large or small.

Wood and white are natural pairs, as wood brings warmth and white paint is always one to bring contrast and enhance the grain of wood.

Texture can be added in the form of woven elements such as a rattan chair mixed with a raw wood or painted finish.

To illustrate I rounded up five different desk and chair medleys, the first is a “get the look” inspired by an image above.

When creating an office in any space in your home, whether it’s a separate room, in a shared guest bedroom, or even a main living space, mixing the finishes, colors, and even styles of the desk and chair always keeps it interesting and fresh.

The possibilities are endless – consider mixing different periods too such as a store-bought new piece with something you’ve inherited, or even something you’ve scored second hand for a bargain. Think beyond the predictable “things must match” trends of the past and mix that old hand me down desk with a modern chair or vice versa, you’ll be delighted that you did!

  1. I so agree with you. I have a curvy secretary/desk that will look great with a stool of some sort. I’m thinking of a figure eight shape.

  2. I’m dying of lust for the green lacquered desk in the first pic! Where can I find this treasure?? Thanks!!

  3. Hear, hear – I agree with Kimberly! LOVE that green lacquered parsons desk in the first photo. Where to find it? (I know West Elm sells similar ones, but not in green).

  4. Ladies, I believe that it green desk was from West Elm but they no longer carry that color.
I think the following is a close second…

  5. I love mixing it up! Right now I’m really into painted rattan furniture paired with a great desk of a different color.

  6. Hi Kimberly and Sarah, sadly the green version is no longer available but if you follow the link to the blue one from Home Decorators, you’ll find they have a few colors and the cost is $199 compared to West Elm’s which is $349 – you can always paint them in a high gloss finish!
