TREND: Natural Wood

I will be the first to admit that I love painted wood. When it comes to wood, whether it’s furniture, moldings, accessories, or what have you, I typically prefer it painted. If you had the chance to visit my house, you’d see that all of my molding is a crisp white. You’d also notice that a lot of my furnishings are vintage and painted. I really can’t explain why I’m drawn to these types of pieces.

Lately, however, I have been inspired by natural wood. I especially like it when it’s a little roughed up and vintage looking. It’s as if the wood grain tells a story. Whether it’s a lamp with natural wood legs or something as simple as a cutting board, I’m attracted to the uniqueness of the piece. Like a fingerprint, the wood grain of each is different. I love this because even if the style or craftsmanship is the same, every piece is unique.

This week, I was inspired by this eclectic nook in this fabulous living room. Beyond all of the wonderful and personal accessories in this room, I was immediately attracted to the natural wood doors on the built-in cabinets. They add such character, warmth and life to the this little corner of the room. There’s no doubt that these doors have a rich history. Pulling inspiration from these, I compiled a collection of some of my favorite natural wood pieces to help you add warmth, character, and history to your space.

I’m pushing myself to incorporate more natural woods into my home, Through this process, I’m learning that a mix of painted and natural wood creates a really beautiful and collected look. What are you thoughts on natural wood accents?

TREND: White Serveware

When it comes to home decor and entertaining, there are a few things that make me weak in the knees. One of those things is white dishes. Be it dinnerware or serving pieces, I’m kind of obsessed. I actually have two cabinets in my dining room and kitchen almost full of white dishes. And, to be honest with you, I use most, if not all, of them.

As soon as I saw this fall-inspired image of pumpkins and gourds stacked on white dishes, I knew I wanted to put together a collection of some of my favorite pieces.

Part of the reason this looks so gorgeous is because white literally works with everything. No matter the season or what you currently have for your dinnerware or kitchen or dining room color palette, white will always coordinate. Plus, it will continue to work as your style changes. White is timeless.

TREND: Gold

Have you noticed gold popping up everywhere in the home decor world these days? Yeah, me too. It’s amazing how quickly trends can come and go. Four years ago, I would have turned my nose up at anything gold; now I can’t get enough.

I’m loving the way that designers are introducing gold in both big and small ways. It could be something as simple as swapping out silver flatware for gold. How perfect and gorgeous would that look on your table atThanksgiving? I also like how gold has been incorporated into this Pin it inspiration image. A simple gold lamp adds luxury, style, and a little sparkle.

If you’re just getting on the gold bandwagon and have a lot of other finishes in your home, have no fear. Today’s eclectic designs encourage mixing metals and finishes. Be fearless when decorating your space by using the things that you love. You can’t go wrong. So whether you’re looking to go bold with gold or just add a few accessories to your space, check out some of my favorite gilt accents.

TREND: Decorating with Maps

Once used to help travelers get from one place to another, maps have become an almost extinct directional tool in recent years. Thanks to GPS, cell phones, and the Internet, hardly anyone refers to a map for directions anymore. Thankfully though, designers, crafters, and bloggers are putting maps to good use.

Because of their unique designs, interesting colors, and sense of wanderlust, maps are now being repurposed into everything from framed wall art to table tops to book covers and wallpaper. Stores are even selling map plates, globes, and vintage art prints of maps to create a sense of worldliness and travel in home decor. I particularly like how these simple white framed maps add freshness and color to this mantel.

To help stir a little globe-trotting creativity in your own space, I have selected some of my favorite map-inspired accessories from the BHG Shop. Isn’t the map washi tape the best? How perfect would that be for decorating plain envelopes?

TREND: Ikat

When it comes to fabrics, I’m all about about mixing patterns and materials to get a really collected and eclectic look. One of my favorite fabric trends right now is ikat. You may not be sure what I’m referring to, but I bet you’ve seen it in magazines, Pinterest, and your other places you go to for design inspiration. Basically, because of how the material is made, the lines of the pattern are very fuzzy or blurry. Thanks to its recent rise in popularity, options for ikat prints range from bold and modern to subdued and traditional. Traditional ikat is created by tie-dying yarn and then weaving it into an intricate pattern. I should also mention that ikat is pronounced “e-kaht”, not “i-cat” as I mistakenly pronounced it for quite some time.

Today’s Pin it inspiration image has two ikat-inspired fabrics. You can see them in the curtains and the chairs cushions. In addition to all of the wonderful patterns, I’ve also been loving navy blue lately, so this image really caught my attention. Plus, my own dining room walls are a similar color. I love how this space incorporates several trendy patterns including solids, stripes, and two styles of ikat. The color ties them all together while the varying patterns create a lot of interest.

Maybe you’re ready to go bold with ikat and make a major statement with drapes. Or you might prefer to incorporate the pattern more subtly in a lampshade. Check out some of my favorite ikat-inspired pieces below. Are you loving this pattern as much as I am? What’s your favorite pattern for decorating?

TREND: Unique Dining Room Chairs

One thing that I love about the contemporary design aesthetic is people’s courage to be a bit more bold and unique. I’ve noticed this trend in many different areas of interior design. Whether it’s an unusual light fixture, mixed patterns, or unexpected pops of color, people seem to be taking more risks and using things they really love.

Taking such risks, however, can be nerve-racking because some of these choices involve a lot of time and money. To make things less scary, I suggest starting off small and working up to a bigger project. A great place to start is in your dining room. Changing your dining room chairs is a quick way to give your space an entirely new look without too much of an investment. Despite what design trends have taught us in the past, dining chairs no longer need to “match” your table. In fact, having elements that don’t exactly match creates a beautiful, collected-over-time look.

I really fell in love with today’s “Pin it” inspiration image for exactly this reason. The unique cow hide-inspired chairs add a wonderful whimsical feel to a typically utilitarian space. Not only are the chairs out of the norm, but they are also visually interesting and inviting.

Today, I’m sharing ten of my favorite dining room chairs. Whether you’re looking for bold color, terrific texture, or something classically chic one of these options is sure to infuse life into your space. Which chair are you loving the most?
