From My Home to Yours: Pattern

Recently, I participated in a Summer Tour of Homes with some truly fabulous home decor bloggers. It was a rewarding experience because it made me clean my house and it allowed me to see my place as a whole rather than as individual rooms. When we decorate our homes, we want each room to look great, yet it’s so important that it all work together as well. This doesn’t mean that things need to match, but styles and colors should work together harmoniously.

I’ve learned over the years that my house tends to look best with more neutral colors on the wall. I’ve embraced this fact and have found so many beautiful neutral colors that allow the architecture and details to take center stage. However, as you may know, I love color, so painting gray walls is often difficult.

This is where color and pattern come in. Take my living room, for example. While the walls and furnishings are mostly neutral, I’ve made the space come alive with bold color and pattern. And although there are a lot of different patterns, they play together nicely against the neutral background. Mixing patterns also works for me because it’s an excuse to buy unique home accessories, something I love to do.

Today, I’m sharing a few of my favorites both from the living room and other areas in my home. I hope these examples inspire you to try some fun and interesting patterns in your space.

For the Love of Color: Coral

TREND: Coral

It’s no secret that coral has become one of today’s hottest colors. Whether it’s in fashion, entertaining, or decorating, coral is making an appearance everywhere, and I for one couldn’t be more excited. There is something about this warm, peach-like pink that just makes my heart sing. And yes, even though it’s traditionally been a more feminine color choice, I find it happy and welcoming. So much so that I think it’s perfect for both men and women.

Recently, I was drawn to the coral tones in this colorful kitchen nook. The space feels joyful and alive, in part because of the coral accents against the white backdrop. From the pillows to the curtains to the glassware to the fresh peaches, coral makes this an inviting room where I would love to spend my mornings.

After searching some of my favorite shops, I’ve pulled together a fabulous collection of coral-inspired goodies to help you add a punch of pink to your space. What pieces are your favorites? Have you fallen for coral, too?

For the Love of Color: Cherry Red

‘Tis the season for patio sitting and front porch rocking.Every year I look forward to the month of May when I get to clean off the deck, break out the patio furniture, fire up the grill, and plant a few flowers. There’s something about basking in the sun or dining al fresco that makes life just a little sweeter.

Every year I’m always on the hunt for inspiration when it comes to decorating my porch. I have fairly standard wrought iron furniture pieces, so I like to add in different colors to really bring the space to life. While I’ve tried a variety of colors over the years, one color I always return to is cherry red. I’m not sure why I love this bright and bold color for outdoor decorating. Maybe it’s because of the association with of geraniums or checkered tablecloths, but red instantly reminds me of summer fun with friends and family.

I especially loved this gorgeous screened-in porch. With a mostly neutral background, a few red chairs tucked around the table make this space instantly inviting. Today, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite cherry red pieces that will add a bit of summer color to your home.

For the Love of Color: Navy

I’m not sure why it is, but as of late I’ve been totally taken with anything navy. So much so, that this past week I spray painted my outdoor bistro set the most gorgeous shade of navy. It turned out beautifully, giving me just the look I wanted. In the past, navy was never really a color that came to mind when decorating. However, lately I’ve been introducing touches of it in my spaces and loving the results.

As amazing as it could look, I’m not the type to paint an entire room navy. However, using it as an accent color can be brilliant. I especially love the space in the photo above. In this room, the architecture is the star. The bursts of navy blue in the pillows not only make the space look inviting, but give it a contemporary edge. I think the reason I’m loving navy so much is that depending on how it’s used, it can feel traditional, regal, or even modern.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one loving navy these days. I’ve been seeing more and more accessories and furnishings in this fabulous shade at so many of my favorite stores. Today, I’ve pulled together a few pieces to inspire you to give navy a try in your own space. What do you think? Have you been bit by the navy bug?

From My Home To Yours: Poufs!

Can we talk about poufs for a minute? I’m not sure if you have boarded the pouf-trend train yet, but I’m taking on the role of conductor and inviting you to hop on board. As I’ve mentioned here on Style Spotters, over the last year I’ve been creating an office / living room for myself. While the space is pretty large, it’s divided into two separate areas: the office and the living room.Because of the layout, the living room got the short end of the stick in terms of space. However, I’m making that area work as hard as possible.

First, I incorporated a small sectional for maximum seating and total television watching comfort. Given the size of the sectional, I don’t have a lot of space for side chairs without making things feel cramped. The solution? Poufs!

Adding two patterned poufs on the opposite side of my coffee table not only offers me extra seats, but also provides an element of fun. It’s like having a couple mini- bean bag chairs. Adults have an opportunity to be kids again, but in a super stylish and trendy way. You have to love that!

With more and more people on the hunt for the perfect pouf for their space, the varieties, styles, colors, and shapes available these days are endless. Today I want to share some of my favorite poufs in hopes that one or two will fit your space.

For the Love of Color: Sunny Yellow

This week’s color is the ever-optimistic-and-happiness-inducing yellow. I’m actually pulling this particular color inspiration from BHG’s Color Palette of the Year. In case you missed it, you can check it out here. I’m totally obsessed with the palette and even more excited that it includes a sunny yellow. For me, yellow is my go-to color when I want to infuse a little happiness and energy into a space.

Taking its cue from nature, yellow, like spring tulips and daffodils, instantly makes a room feel fresh and alive. You can see this in the inspiration picture above. Without being overly bright, the sunny yellow accents make this white bedroom for two a warm and welcome retreat.

Something as simple as a pillow, an accent table, or even a bouquet of daffodils can add a touch of happy yellow. Here are a few of my favorite joy-inducing yellow pieces.
