We’ve just returned from an amazing trip where our parent company Meredith Corporation, along with Lowes, and Rebuilding Together, worked to rebuild a community devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Meredith Corporation volunteers have worked across the country to improve the lives and communities of people in need throughout our 12-year partnership with Rebuilding Together, and this year we focused on the New York community of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn.
We loved spending time with homeowners and lending a hand! Below are photos from our first visit in May, and our trip back to the area this week (June 6th) for the official build day. There was still a lot of work to be done since the storm hit last year, and our team was excited to help restore homes throughout the area. Michael Wurm, Jr. of Inspired by Charm joined us for this project, too. Thanks for joining us and lending a hand, Michael!
We arrived in Gerritsen Beach early on Thursday and headed to Kiddie Beach for a quick breakfast and kick-off where speakers welcomed volunteers and shared stories of the area. We also did a little stretching before getting to work! Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz declared June 6th, Rebuilding Together Day, and announced that Gerritsen Beach “will rebuild, rebound and recover!”
After the welcome, volunteers and BHG editors made their way to 35 Melba Ct., where the amazing homeowners Dominic and Susan, introduced themselves. The Rebuilding Together team leader divided workers into teams, and we were off! Throughout the day volunteers painted the home’s interior, worked on the side-yard garden, added fencing and a useful shed. We also added siding to the home and brought in raised beds. Once completed, this restored home will be featured in the November issue of Better Homes and Gardens!
BHG Editor-in-Chief Gayle Butler spent time with Susan and worked to add siding to the home. Hydrangea and other plants were added to the garden, and the garden started to take shape!
Volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon, and near the end of the day, Susan received housewarming gifts from Meredith Corporation and Crate and Barrel!
At the end of the day, Michael and Better Homes and Gardens editors gathered for a photo in front of the completed side-yard. What a great day!
