Get the look: Modern Lake House

This summer we took a major leap and bought a lake house two hours away from our home in Oklahoma City in a little town called Carlton Landing.  Starting over with furnishing another house from scratch has been a ton of work, but majorly gratifying to see the transformation. But part of me was majorly overwhelmed – where do we even begin with a this totally blank canvas? When we first saw the house, it was in early fall of 2013 and as pictured above, still in construction. Since then it’s gotten a new (and better) coat of exterior paint and interior buildout was completed by May of this year. We spent the winter months planning furniture layouts and daydreaming about how we were going to decorate. Here was our overall inspiration board for the interiors:

I wanted to avoid any typical lake house looks (i.e., dark or lodge-y), but not swing too far beachy on the other end of the spectrum.  Light, bright, and airy with nautical touches were the words that kept coming to mind. So we chose Benjamin Moore’s Decorator White for all the walls which is similar to what we have in our OKC house and as I analyzed all of my inspiration photos, I realized the key to getting the look I wanted was to use a bold color as an accent. Part of me wanted to go with a red/orange, but in the end we went with yellow to pop against all the navy blue furniture. Thankfully my husband was on board – although he did put the kibosh on a citrus coffee table I had my eye on(womp womp).

And we’re loving how it’s turned out. With a base of navy and shades of blue, we’ve added texture and color layer by layer. There’s lots of things left to do, but the house feels so light, airy, and refreshing. Which is perfect in the sweltering Oklahoma summer heat (hello, 100 degrees!).
