My husband and I have been giving the topic of solid surface countertops a lot of thought lately since we’re in the process of buying a fixer upper, and one countertop worthy of consideration that has been rising in popularity among DIY bloggers and remodelers is concrete. Kitchens take a beating with daily use so every homeowner always considers durability as a major factor when choosing countertops. Concrete is both heat and scratch resistant, and its smooth contemporary look is equally appealing.
The benefits of concrete are that properly sealed surfaces clean up with a mild cleanser and cloth, and the natural gray tones in concrete blend beautifully with stainless steel appliances.
Concrete countertops are fabricated much like driveways or walkways but in the shape of your counter space. They can also be colorized just like outdoor concrete surfaces. The concrete material is not expensive, but one con is that the fabrication and installation can drive up the price due to the time intensive nature of the process and the weight of concrete slabs.
Concrete countertops are a natural fit for outdoor kitchens or bars, they blend seamlessly with exterior materials from stone to stucco.
If you want the look of concrete countertops, several do-it-yourselfers have achieved it at a low cost by covering their existing laminate countertops with a product called Ardex Feather Finish. It’s a labor intensive process but the result is fantastic!
Concrete is porous so it does need to be sealed, you can opt for a matte or honed look or get a glossy polished with several layers of carnauba wax. When sealed properly, concrete countertops will withstand spills, and they are both heat and scratch resistant so they’re extremely durable. Concrete countertops are trending, but given the look and ability to withstand wear, it’s for a very good reason!
