Spaces for Reading Chairs

Simple pleasures bring great comfort and the one thing I’ve learned over the years is that a reading chair in a cozy corner is one of life’s truest luxuries. Whether your preference for words comes in the form of a modern tablet or the sensory pages of a book, having a spot to catch up on your reading and the latest news is precious real estate in any residence.

The minimal requirements for the perfect reading corner include a comfortable upholstered chair, a perch for your reading material (and beverage), and lighting for evening hours.

With winter arriving, having a reading chair close to the fireside is a centuries old remedy to making yourself cozy while temperatures drop outdoors. Add a lumbar pillow and a cozy throw blanket and you just may find yourself nodding off to sleep!

Bedrooms are designed for repose, so including a cozy chair or chaise in a corner for the purpose of relaxed reading complements that important purpose.

A child’s room is a wonderful place for a reading chair since children adore a bedtime story, and a rocker serves the purpose of lulling little ones to sleep once the page “The End” is turned.

For all the hours you spend in your home office doing your best work, it’s nice to unplug for a period of time and curl up with interests that stimulate the mind. Having a sofa or chair in a home office affords the luxury of a few moments stolen to recharge before returning to work.

A den or library is an obvious space to tuck a reading chair, but instead of a neutral fabric, go bold and upholster yours in a hue you love, it will beckon you to retreat to its cushioned comfort time and again!

  2. I’ve wedged a cozy chair into a corner of my morning room. I have to compete with the dog for my favorite sunny spot. Sometimes we even share. It’s the best way to spend time in my favorite room in my house.

  3. I’m getting ready to rearrange my entire living room and a reading corner will be incorporated. I got a swivel chair on Craigslist for $10 which I will reupholster and make lovely. I’m so excited!

  4. LOVE that gray chair..would love to cozy up in that with a book and a blanket!

  5. I’m a “nester”. I’ve got a cozy reading chair in nearly every room of the house so I can follow the sunshine. They get a linen throw in the summer and a soft wool throw in the winter for impromptu naps…you’re right, simple pleasures are the best!

Huge pet peeve-not publishing the shopping information. I scoured the internet trying find something similar. Not too shabby chic, not too formal. it’s not the Restoration Hardware chair. the legs are different. It’s not the Crate and Barrel chair. That chair is too sloppy. The above link is the closest I could find. Ultimately, I’ll probably just have it custom made.

    Like I said-huge pet peeve.

  22. Please tell us where the gray chair is from. Thank you!

  23. I found the newer version of the grey chair. It’s called “Montgomery” and it’s on Birch Lane website!

  24. I agree w A. Lewis! The grey chair is soo comfy and everybody’s been asking where it’s from. The sloane english rolled arm link no longer works. It’s the cushion back and the seat cushion that make it different than what we’re all seeing out there. This is the closest I can find: http://www.leeindustries.com/style_detail/lee/id/3477-01/in/3477_01_0909

  25. +1 to the Montgomery on Birch Lane’s website and Lee Industrustries. Both are very similar. Thank heavens I’ve been looking all over for something like this.
