5 Spaces for Horizontal Plank Walls

Plank wall treatments are all the rage in the design and DIY world right now. As a community, we’ve always loved wainscoting for how it adds both texture and contrast.  We’ve seen classic wainscot treatments like tongue and groove or beadboard installed in vertical formation to increase height in a room, but lately the idea has been turned on its head, or at a 90 degree angle to be more precise.

This year, plank wood walls are appearing everywhere in painted and stained versions, and in a horizontal application. The look of wide painted planks in an entry makes a perfect backdrop to a welcoming vignette created with a small table and artwork.

Horizontal plank walls in the bathroom lend a cottage feel. They can be painted in any color of choice or kept a crisp white as a backdrop to a vanity, mirrors, and fixtures.

In a living or family room room with a high ceiling, a horizontal application counters the drama of extra height and acts as a subtle textural backdrop for staging comfortable furnishings.

Planks of wood add interest to a kitchen space – layer thin painted strips on the ceiling and contrast with lightly stained versions on the walls behind open shelves.

To introduce a rustic feel in the bedroom, install strips of weathered wood gathered from inexpensive (and often free) pallets from floor to ceiling to create an dramatic accent wall. Full DIY details on how to create this version at Just A Girl blog.
