Trend: Trellis Patterns
I’m in love with this foyer. Case in point: I’ve pinned the photo at least three times. My favorite part is probably the wallpaper. The green is gorgeous and the pattern is right on trend, but not so out there that you’ll tire of it in six months or say, “What was I thinking?”
It’s definitely the inspiration for my own foyer. My hubby and I recently bought our first home, and one of my first projects is to tackle the foyer. It currently has charming woodwork going for it, but not much else. The walls are garishly red. Not the first impression I want to give friends and family who come through our door. I was itching to wallpaper the foyer, but had not a clue in what pattern. (My Pinterest board can tell you the tale of my journey. I was all over the place!) And then I saw this foyer again, and it hit me. Duh- trellis! It’s a pattern I’ve been seeing in lots of places and I’ve loved this room forever, why not use it as my muse? I settled on a paper with a metallic gold trellis pattern on an ivory background. (I was so excited about it, I placed the order before we had even moved in.)
Trellis can be a tricky pattern, especially when it’s a variety that is larger in scale and applied on an expansive surface (like a wall), because it’s bold, but is also lacy, which gives it a delicate quality. So how do you make the pattern shine? Pair it with the right stuff. In my fave foyer, doses of black and strong shapes (like the mirror and console table), bring substance to the room, but are neutral enough to let the trellis resound.
So how am I planning to try out trellis in my own foyer? Since my paper is neutral, I’m going to bring in a patterned rug for color (which features hues used in the living room adjacent to the foyer) and let everything else hang back by using furnishing and accessories with gold finishes, to coordinate with the paper.
Love trellis? Here are more ways to get the look!
