There are 20 categories of competition in the Better Home Better
Living Contest, that cover the range of home improvement projects. |
Best Use of Color Indoors:
All applications of color within interior spaces that may include
but are not limited to walls, furnishings, fabrics, accessories,
and wall art.
Best Use of Color Outdoors: All applications
of color outside of a house and within the homeowners
property boundaries that may include but are not limited to
flowers, trees, shrubs, exterior furnishings and accessories,
garden structures and ornaments, and portions of a house exterior.
Best Special Occasion Table: Any decorative
table setting arrangement. Best
Entertaining Space Indoors: Any area within the house
that allows and encourages friendly interaction with guests.
Best Entertaining Space Outdoors: Any
public area outside the house, such as a deck or patio, that
allows and encourages friendly interaction with guests.
Best Kitchen: Combining good looks with
functionality at any price range.
Best Bathroom: Combining good looks with
functionality at any price range.
Best Remodeling: Any remodeling project
of any size, scope, or price that results in a beautiful or
imaginative interpretation of living space. Includes exterior-only
remodeling and historic home renovation.
Best Family Party: A get-together such
as a birthday party, graduation celebration, reunion, anniversary
event, or holiday gathering. Best
Family Garden: An outdoor space within the homeowners
property boundaries that encourages family members to enjoy
such activities as outdoor play, gardening, and relaxing.
Best Indoor Before
& After: Any remodeling or decorating project of
any size that includes changes documented by photographs depicting
the project before and after completion. Best
Outdoor Before & After: Any outdoor landscaping or
exterior remodeling project that includes changes documented
by photographs depicting the project before and after completion.
Best Kids
Play Space: Any area, either inside or outside the house,
designed for kids to enjoy. Best
Weekend Project: Any project completed in a single weekend
(Friday evening through Sunday evening). The project may include
but is not limited to decorative crafts, furniture making, and
home improvements. Best
Update Under $5,000: Any remodeling or decorating project
that improves living space and that costs less than $5,000 to
complete. The value of homeowners labor used to complete
the project is not factored into the final cost. Best
Do-It-Yourself Project: Any remodeling or decorating
project that improves living space and was completed using homeowner
labor exclusively. Work completed by any full-time member of
the household counts as DIY labor. Best
Work or Hobby Space: Any area, inside or outside the
house, that is designed as a home office or designed for pursuing
creative work or hobby interests. Best
Home Retreat: Any area, inside or outside the house,
made exclusively for relaxation or contemplation. Areas may
include but are not limited to master suites, bathrooms, reading
nooks, and garden sitting rooms. Best
Home Entertainment Space: Any area designed for the enjoyment
of electronic media, such as stereos, televisions, and home
computers. Best
New Home: Any newly constructed home of any size or style
that combines beauty with function. Click

Cosponsor Competition:
Contestants may wish to compete in Cosponsor categories by checking
the applicable Cosponsor category on the entry form. To be eligible
to compete in the Cosponsor competitions, you must have purchased
the applicable Cosponsor product in 2004 and submit a cash register
receipt as proof of purchase. Residents of AZ, CO, CT, MD, ND,
TN, VT and Puerto Rico may not participate in Cosponsor competitions.
