Across from the vanity in the previous slide, interesting convex tiles installed in a basket-weave pattern create a stunning backdrop to the smooth limestone tub surround. Accent lights turn the splash-proof wall into a contemporary sculpture.

Contemporary design doesn't have to translate into cold materials and harsh lines. The proof is in this earthy bathroom retreat filled with spa-quality features. While teak planks warm the feet, the abstract shapes and variegated colors of cashmere slate walls delight the visual senses. Linear fixtures and cabinetry in warm tones continue the clean-line appeal.

Pampering Paradise

Three shapes and colors of watery blue glass tile reflect the hues of nearby Lake Michigan and convey the purpose of this upscale shower: relaxation. The pampering steam shower features a chaise-like undulating bench that encourages the occupant to recline in ultimate comfort.

In Raw Form

With a view that gazes upon scenic wilderness, the goal for this bathroom was a serene retreat that echoes its surroundings. This was achieved by incorporating unrefined and organic materials into a design that is contemporary but not too slick. Slate used on the walls and floors shows clefts, bumps, and rough edges where stones have naturally broken. The cabinetry is crafted from salvaged, blackened steel left in its raw, unpolished form.

Warm Up to Contemporary

Cool colors aren't a prerequisite of contemporary style. Cream and coral hues radiate from honey onyx tiles that warm and energize this lavish bathroom. The tile's shimmering quality and graphic geometric design lend crisp, contemporary character.

Streamlined Powder Room

An intriguing tile floor pattern grounds visual interest in this powder room, allowing straightforward elements to make a clean statement in the remainder of the small space. A wall-mounted copper faucet pours into the streamlined concrete sink mounted atop a simplistic wooden base.

Magic with Mirrors

A double vanity tucks neatly beneath the angle of an eave in this bathroom, but individual mirrors were impossible. A single, sizable round mirror adds design aesthetic, while a mirrored wall behind adds function and reflects light through the relatively small space.

Modern Pick-Me-Up

A bright white tub, smooth white marble floor tiles, and simple white-oak cabinetry take on an opulent new attitude when paired with a couple of dramatic wall treatments in lush amber hues. Rich, heavily veined onyx illuminates the vanity as the countertop, sinks, and wall mirror frame it. Glossy three-dimensional tiles set off the tub as an artful accent wall.

Loft Living

Much of the appeal of trendy loft condos is the open floor plans and exposed structures. To preserve the industrial style of this loft space while defining the bath area, frosted glass was fitted into a metal framework to create privacy walls that still allow light to flow between the spaces. Douglas fir drawers and a golden stone countertop add visual warmth to the vanity.

Face-to-Face Design

A unique two-sided vanity island brings artistic form and convenient function into this Zen-inspired bathroom. Crisp limestone and warm mahogany blend to enhance the room's serenity. Thin vertical lighting strips built into the mirror frame and a recessed compartment for electrical outlets in the side of each sink maintain the clean design with a pretty face from all angles.

Serene Substance

Concrete defies gravity and visual weight by floating between two walls to form this luxurious vanity. A wall-mounted faucet on a shallow concrete ledge eases the transition from the smooth horizontal vanity to the vertical expanse of the glass tile mosaic walls. Mirrored niches complete the sophisticated design.

An Ocean Oasis

An expansive ocean view is enough on its own to set a tranquil mood in this beachfront bathroom. With a reflective coating preserving privacy through the room's wall of windows, a sleek double-sided vanity rests unobtrusively between the view and the shower and tub. River rock encompassing the shower and a rain-style showerhead reinforce the spa setting and the soothing scene outside.

Abundant Storage

Storage defines this expansive double vanity. Cabinetry towers divide his and her spaces while providing generous capacity for linens, grooming items, and hidden electrical outlets. Sleek and shallow basins resting on the countertop allow more room in the vanity base. Even the mirrors open to reveal 8-inch-deep cabinets also equipped with electricity.

Rejuvenated with Light

Desperately lacking natural light, this once cramped and dark master bath now has a renewed, brighter outlook. The homeowners expanded into a neighboring, little-used room to gain space and also the benefit of an exterior wall with windows. A remote control skylight over the center of the room brings in even more natural light.

Small Space Solutions

Space is at a premium in this guest bathroom. Conscious design choices help it look and function larger. Honed limestone tile walls present a unifying neutral backdrop that allows the tub/shower wall to gain the spotlight with blue glass tiles. Clean lines keep the vanity functional while unobtrusive. A special-plumbed recessed ceiling above the shower allows for a spa-like perk: a rain-style showerhead.
