Question:
Early-sprouting grape hyacinth
My grape hyacinths are starting to come up now. Will they bloom this autumn instead of spring?
Expert's Answer
In many areas, grape hyacinths (Muscari armeniacum) naturally send up foliage in autumn and then again in spring. It?s normal and doesn?t mean they?ll bloom out of season. Look at them as good ?marker? plants. If you plant them among your spring-flowering bulbs, their fall foliage reminds you where to dig. Don?t worry about them?just enjoy the attractive blue-green foliage and the reminder of blooms to come in spring!
