1 . I have a red climbing Mandeville plant I'd like to winter-over. Could I collect the seeds on the flower or just dig up the entire plant and keep indoors over the cold months. It's getting colder everyday so I have to do something quickly.
Hi I would not bother with those seeds. It's very likely they are not viable since most mandevillas are hybrids. These plants are not easy to winterover, but if you want to try, cut it back and move ...

3 . I live in zone 3 and can I move some of my annual plants in my flowerbed now in the fall?I was just given a cone flower plant, is it safe to plant it outdoors now? Thank You for any information you could give me.
Hi Well coneflower is a perennial plant that can be put outdoors in your garden. If you truly have a coneflower, it should come back next year. Annuals will die in your garden with the first frost. Y...

4 . I never before had a little garden until this year. I don't know if or I should prune it. I only remember the first part of the name of the plant. It's a dusty (something). I grew them with my flowers. They grow in part shade and part sun. Do you know the name.
Well there is an annual plant called Dusty Miller. Could that be the plant you are talking about? It has finely cut silver-gray leaves. This is an annual plant and it will die back with the first fros...

5 . what is the best care as far as cutting back, watering, etc when bringing geraniums inside for the winter months and having them healthy and full enough to bring back outside in the late spring?...we live in Wisconsin
Keep geraniums in bright light, cool, and on the dry side during winter. Temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees are ideal. Water only when the soil feels dry to the touch. And provide as much light as...

6 . Hi, Is it possible to dig an angel trumpet plant up and bring it in the house. The flowers started to die and I love it or how do you take cuttings from an angel trumpet plant or are they seeds in the flowers? thank you.
You can overwinter angel's trumpet (Brugmansia) indoors if you have a very bright location for it. Dig up as much of the root system as possible, and plant it in a large container, using potting soil....

7 . I have a beautiful hanging mandavilla, and now that it's been very cold here I brought it in to my garage. It is still blooming, how can I keep it over the winter? Will it come back? Susan
Hi It's a tropical vine so as soon as it is exposed to freezing temperatures, it will die. You can bring it indoors and place it in a sunny window and try to overwinter it that way. I've had mixed r...

8 . I had some beautiful full thick headed zinnias this past summer and I have been waiting for the heads to dry so I could save the seeds. Because they were so thick and large this was happening slowly on the plant and then we got freezing weather for 3 nights. Is it too late to collect the seeds? I am not sure if the cold weather and heavy freeze ruined the seeds. I know which plant had the pink seeds that I wanted and they are all brown from the freeze. These were not the regular zinnias...
Freezing conditions should not have damaged the seeds, assuming that they were mature and relatively dry already. You could go ahead and harvest the heads from the plants that you identified as the on...

9 . when do I plant the "balloon flower" seeds that i gathered? i believe they are annuals but reseed themselves --so do I plant the seeds in the fall just as if they had fallen there?
Hi Balloon flower, as I know it, is a perennial but often common names like this will vary around the country. You can leave some seeds on the ground and save the rest for spring planting. That way, ...

10 . We have new rosebushes, hostas and several other plants that have been growing very well since they were planted in May, however, we have noticed that the leaves are being eaten away. When I was out there the other day, I noticed that there are lots and lots of grasshoppers that don't even want to budge off the leaves when you shake the leaf. I had heard about spraying them with a mixture of water and lemon scented detergent so I mixed Melaleuca dishwashing detergent & water but it didn't help
Hi Sadly, once grasshoppers get mature it takes a lot to kill them. Your mix would not even stun them. I've found that a malathion/rotenone based spray will knock them back. The best time to control ...

11 . I have sweet potatoe vines growing outside in pots and want to know how to keep the bulds through the winter, so I can plant them again next year. Thanks Wendy
Hi You can dig and store them as you would regular potatoes or sweet potatoes. Basically, dig them up, clean off all soil, and plunge them into a box filled with some slightly moist sand. Then, place...

12 . I live in Clovis, California. I bought a beautiful lavender/purple plant at Savemart. They said it was Blooming Heather. Is it a perennial or an annual? Where is it best to plant? Does it like sun or shade?
Heather (Calluna vulgaris) is a perennial evergreen shrub that grows best in full sun in soil that is acidic and well-drained. Numerous varieties are available, and flower color can range from lavend...

13 . IS IT TIME TO PLANT PANSIES IN ZONE 7? IF NOT WHAT ARE SOME GOOD FLOWER TO PLANT NOW INSTEAD OF MUMS?
It should be time now to plant pansies in Zone 7. You could also plant flowering kale, snapdragons, or toadflax.

14 . I invested in 2 nice plants only known as "hens and chicks"..I think they are annuals and spread out. What should I do to protect my plants over the winter here in NE PA?
Hi Well hens and chicks are perennials that belong to a plant family called sempervivems and there are many forms avaiable. Some are winter hardy and some are not, although they all basically look si...

15 . How and when do I trim and transplant mums?
Hi The best time to transplant them is in the early spring, just as they begin to show growth at the soil level. As far as pruning goes, you can remove the old foliage now or in the spring. I prefer ...
