1 . my lawn it LITTERALLY COVERED with dime-sized holes. There is no dirt-mounding such as ants would cause, and the ground is not soft and spongy as I would expect from some insect tunneling under ground. Can you tell me what might be causing this and what to do about it? I would rather use a natural remedy if possible as I hope to attract birds and butterflies next summer. There are also some larger holes - 1 1/2 to 2 inches across, and I have seen some small snakes around the property.
I can only think of one thing that might be causing the problem as you've described it. Sod webworms sometimes infest lawns, and then birds come in and feed on them, especially starlings and grackles....

2 . Will tilling up my existing yard (crabgrass) and removing it prevent it from returning? My yard is 95% crab grass 5 % mixed bermuda and st. augustine.
Crabgrass is an annual grass that germinates from seed each year. Tilling up your current lawn will get rid of the plants that are there now, but the seeds that are lying dormant in the soil will germ...

3 . what steps I take to kill the weeds from my lawn and fix brown spots and dried weeds? How I prepare my side walk to plant flowers after weeds dried ? What tipe of flowers and bushes are easy to care and not prone to diseases for zone 10 ?
The answers to these questions depend on a lot of factors. What type of lawn do you have? Certain weed killers are labeled only for certain types of grasses. Are the weeds grassy weeds or broadleaf we...

4 . I have a long faily narrow yard that has been over run by my black lab and several thorn weeds(eg: mostly dirt & patches of grass). I want to lay sod in the spring but dont know how to do so and keep it from being destroyed by the dog. I really need some suggestions.
Hi Well the problem you're going to have is if your dog has free run of your backyard without supervision, you won't be able to have a perfect lawn. Dogs and perfect lawns don't mix. We suggest that ...

5 . I just recently moved into my own townhouse and I have a 600 sq. ft yard, I would like to put in grass (Chino, CA.), but I can't really afford sod right now. is putting seed down just as good as sod, or will it not grow well in this area. It is Sept. now and I would like to get it done before winter so I don't have a giant mud puddle . Also, if seed, what do I need to do first. Thank u, Bonnie
Seed works fine IF you prepare the bed first and then keep the seed protected from birds and watered until the grass is established. If your soil is compacted, loosen it up first and consider putting ...

6 . My front lawn slopes down. It is about an acre wide and bare of trees. It is hard to mow and grass is very difficult to grow on the slope. What can I do with the slope to make it more attractive? Example: plant a ground cover - it would take lots of plants. Grow better grass - live in North Carolina - what type of grass works best on slopes? Thanks
A slope will not make much difference on which type of lawn grass is most adapted to your area. It will be more affected by exposure to sun, soil type, and temperature ranges. Bermudagrass and zoysiag...

7 . 1.I saw some of my neighboors use white powder for their lawns - what is it? 2. My peonie have whitish discoloration on the leaves - how should I treat this? 3. Last spring I plant a fig tree in a planter-should I leave it in the planter over winter time outside or it's better to keep indoor?
Hi Well the white powder you probably saw was your neighbor applying lime to their turf. Lime is not a fertilizer, but an element that helps change the pH of soils from acid to alkaline. Depending on...

8 . What is the best type of grass for Georgia and when should it be planted?
The southern half of Georgia is in the Warm-Humid turf zone. Bermudagrass and zoysiagrass are the best adapted grasses. Northern Georgia is part of the Transition Zone. There, tall fescue, bermudagras...

9 . It started as a small patch in one area, now the areas are quite large and throughout the whole lawn. I think it is a cinch bug invasion. I don't think it is thatch. My question is what can I put on this lawn to get it to recover. I read on the internet to intertwine another grass in with the St. Augustine. Is this a solution? To treat the effected areas is it a spray application, my husband has put down a granular product for bugs but made the problem worse.
Have you seen chinch bugs present in the lawn? Chinch bugs certainly can cause death of large patches of lawn, but so can other insects or diseases. A good way to determine if chinch bugs are presen...

10 . Hi - We have a serious problem with ground ivy or Creeping Charlie - it is taking over our yard. We have sprayed with WeedBGone Max and also use fertilizer with weed killer in it. All it seems to do is make it mad! We are considering using Round-up, knowing that is a desperate measure, but what to do? Thanks.
Creeping charlie is one of the most difficult weeds to get rid of if conditions are favorable for its growth. One possible alternative control that you might try before resorting to Round-up is to spr...

11 . I live in PA and have a lot of quack grass in my lawn. It's a broad bladed grass. Is there a way to get rid of it? Thanks, Sharon
There is no selective herbicide that will kill quackgrass and not harm the desirable turf grass. To eliminate it you'll need to spray it with a non-selective herbicide such as glyphosate (Roundup) or ...

12 . I recently removed a 15' circular above ground pool from the corner of my backyard. It had been down about 3 months so the grass underneath looks dead. Will it come back or should I think about planting new grass or sod?
Hi After three months under a pool, I'm sure it's dead. Rake up the dead grass, loosen the soil and replant new seed or sod.

13 . I live in La Mesa, California and have 3 large dogs who have destroyed all the grass in my back yard. Is there a sturdy ground cover that I can plant that will stand up to them? Or do I just give up and have a dirt backyard?
Hi Sadly, there is nothing that can withstand the constant wear and tear of big dogs. The key to having a dog and a garden is to manage the dogs when they are in the yard, and when you are not, keep ...

14 . We live in Ohio and have very sandy soil . What kind of grass seed and fertilizer should we use. We have a lot of ant hills also
If your soil is extremely sandy, it would be beneficial to amend it by adding organic matter such as compost. The compost will help retain water and prevent such rapid drying. Creeping red fescue is...

15 . When should I apply fertilizer to Bahia yard in Central Florida?
Once in early spring, once in late spring/early summer, and once in fall.
