1 . I have a red climbing Mandeville plant I'd like to winter-over. Could I collect the seeds on the flower or just dig up the entire plant and keep indoors over the cold months. It's getting colder everyday so I have to do something quickly.
Hi I would not bother with those seeds. It's very likely they are not viable since most mandevillas are hybrids. These plants are not easy to winterover, but if you want to try, cut it back and move ...

2 . I am Pres. of our condo assn. with 81 units. We have one woman who just moved in this summer that swears she knows that vines will kill evergreen trees. She don't know what kinds of vines, however. Is this true? John Korelc, jack.gail@att.net
Hi Well vines will only kill evergreens if they are allowed to grow over the tops of them, effectively choking out sunlight from the evergreen underneath. Otherwise, vines are fine near evergreens an...

3 . Gentlemen, I have a Clematis vine and a Star Jasmine to plant. I know different climbers need different trellis's. What should I use for each plant. Thank You
Hi Well both of them could climb on any trellis you provide, but the clematis can generally get by on something a little less substantial because the vine doesn't get as heavy. But, you can truly gro...

4 . I have a beautiful hanging mandavilla, and now that it's been very cold here I brought it in to my garage. It is still blooming, how can I keep it over the winter? Will it come back? Susan
Hi It's a tropical vine so as soon as it is exposed to freezing temperatures, it will die. You can bring it indoors and place it in a sunny window and try to overwinter it that way. I've had mixed r...

5 . will Nightshade kill clematis? How can i kill nightshade - no i do not mind getting rid of whatever is near it if it will get rid of it.
There are several types of nightshade. Annual types usually have white flowers and black berries when ripe. The perennial type is a vine with purplish blue flowers and red berries. The foliage and be...

6 . I have the type of clematis that blooms on old wood. It has grown out of control this year, and has a clump of tangled vine hanging off the trellis about 3 feet. I need to know how and when to prune it, and if it could possibly be moved to another location without killing it, as I have read they don't like to be moved. It has been in that spot about 3 years. I live in Mid Missouri- zone 5/6. Thanks, Kim
It's certainly possible to transplant an established clematis, but as you note, they resent being moved. The best time to move it would be late winter or early spring. You can cut it back rather sever...

7 . I planted wisteria 3 years ago, the plants are beautiful but have never bloomed. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Well the key here is where you live and you don't mention that. Wisteria most often doesn't bloom because it's being grown too far north. These plants are generally hardy in the north, but their f...

8 . My beauganvillas are not blooming well. They were planted over 1 1/2 yrs ago/ They were fertilized and sprayed for bugs and are showing sparse flowring. They get enough sun and water. These are mature plants over 7 ft tall. I tried to cut back alot after last season and they did grow new branches, but the older leaves of course will not have blooms, shld I cut back again or feed it with something else.
Hi Well I'm not sure what's going on because if they get enough sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun a day), bougainvillea is generally a prolific grower and bloomer. Make sure they are rece...

9 . I live in Las Vegas. I have a hibiscus in a large container. I went to the nursery with a sample leaf and was told that it had a fungus. I used a fungicide and I still see spots on the new leaves. What should I do? I really don't want to lose it. BTW it hasn't flowered in awhile now.
Most fungicides are preventative only. They can prevent new infections from occurring, but won't eliminate infections that have already started. It's possible that the spots on the newer leaves that y...

10 . I live in Illinois and purchased two Annabelle hydrangeas last year and planted them in an east facing direction in front of my house. They have not bloomed much at all. I have never pruned them due to their newness. I have a neighbor who has the same variety planted on the north side of their home and it is absolutely beautiful. I was wondering if I can transplant the hydrangeas perhaps in October or whenever it becomes dormant on the north direction of my home.
Hi Yes, you can dig them and move them, but the best time is in the very early spring, just before they break dormancy. If you move them in the fall they could be hurt by the freezing and thawing pro...

11 . I have planted a wisteria on the fence, but I can see that it needs to be transplanted to the front yard near the porch. It is 2years old and is getting to big for the fence. When can I transplant it?
Hi, Thanks for writing. You can transplant wisteria pretty much anytime from spring to fall, though the cooler months of spring and fall help the plant get through the transplant shock more easily....

12 . Any particular clematis that is hardy for NE North Dakota? My grandmother and mother both grew them, but I don't know the variety and mom and grandma are deceased. Thanks.
Hi You can do a search with your zip code on our Plant Encyclopedia on this website to see what turns up, but here in Iowa some of my most hardy clematis include the Fall paniculata, Jackmannii, Bett...

13 . I have a Lady Margaret passion vine that WAS beautiful! It was planted in the spring and was doing GREAT until about a month ago. The plant has 2 main vines at its base. About a month ago some of the leaves started yellowing and after investigation it was only from one of the main stems. Slowly all of the leaves turned brown so I trimmed back. Last week I removed all runners from the bad base. It seems as though the rest of the plant is yellowing and leaves folding. No change in routine.HELP
Hi, Thanks for writing. It sounds as though your passionflower is infected with a disease --- but without being able to examine it in person, I really can't say what disease it is. For more help...

14 . I recently built a rock wall flower bed and planted hybiscus and bougainvilla. I lovely vine with very decorative grape-like leaves popped up out of nowhere and is quickly taking over. It has small yellow delicate flowers,a brilliant red/orange fruit with dark slimy seed pods inside, grows fast in full tropical sun when kept moist. I have a photo I can email. Can you help me to identify this? Thanks, Sue
Hi Sue, Thanks for writing. We'd be happy to help identify your mystery plant. It's easiest for us if you post your photo on http://www.bhg.com/photos/gardening/ The last step of the photo-sh...

15 . Hi When we got our old home there were 3 beautiful R of S huge trees and they are sprouting up all over my yard now. I could pull them all day long and never fishish. Same with an awful trumpet vine which grew on a light pole, we had removed and now itovertakes my flower garden, coming up everywhere. I can't get ahead of them. I've tried Rounup and vege killer on the trumpet in the large flower garden. It wraps around my Rof S also. I hate it. Help please?
Hi Well the best way to get rid of that trumpet vine is to saw it off at the base and then paint the stump with a brush-killer herbicide. Roundup isn't really strong enough. You need to get a brush k...
