1 . I recently received a plant as a gift and don't know the what it is or how to take care of it. It has long yellow with green leaves about 4 inches long and it grows upward similar to an Easter Lily but has no flowers. I have it indoors and water it once a week and the leaves have started to turn more yellow and brown and are starting to dry out and fall off.
Hi I'm so sorry, but I don't know what kind of plant you have from the description. I suggest you go to our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and go through our houseplant section to see if you can ...

2 . I have a white fungus growing on a houseplant. What can I use to get rid of it? Is there a spray that I can buy?
Hi Can you describe the fungus and the plant it's on? This might not be a fungus, but perhaps it's mealy bug which forms white, cottony blobs at the leaf axils of plants. I don't know of any white fu...

3 . I have a Schefflera plant that is 4 years old.Received as a small plant,it is now not very attractive. Has grown to about 5 ft. It looks like the Leaning Tower of Piza. Way out of control, but very healthy. I would like to cut it back, but I am afraid of killing it off. How and at what time of year would I do this. It is in my living room, which at the one end east side is all windows, it sits with windows on both sides of it never drops a leaf.
Hi The best time to prune a schefflera is in June or July, while the plant is in growth mode. But, when you prune, you can cut it back to any height you want. Just be sure to cut just above a leaf no...

4 . I notice this year that my tropical plant which is all green mid size. The ends and middle are turning yellow and brown. I only water it once a week and I will mist the leaves on it if I forget to water it. I use to keep it in my dining room in the corner which it would grow, but at a slow pace. I would cut off the bad parts that are turning. What am I doing wrong?
There are many possible causes of yellowing and/or browning leaves on plants. It helps to know the specific kind of plant to be able to focus in on common diseases, insect pests or other environmental...

5 . I just need to trim some dried ends off of my spider plant. Is there a particular way to do this properly?
Hi No, just use a scissors and clip them off. The brown ends on spider plants are caused by shallow watering. Always water enough so that water runs freely out of the holes in the pot. This will keep...

6 . I was given a Coral Cactus..underneight that name it says "Jardin Del Envase". It does do well on my screened in porch in the sun even tho it says it's an indoor plant. I live in Largo, FL..West coast, Tampabay. I would like to know the care of it, and it has grown since last year & i think should be repotted..but don't know how. & does it need fertilizer? It sort of growns in a fan shape, thorns of course, and then has tiny pink flowers along the top that bloom in spring & summer..
Hi The common name, coral cactus is generally given to a grafted jungle cactus that does best in very bright light with an occasional drenching of the soil. This plant is closer in its needs to a Chr...

7 . I bought a mini rose bush and have planted it indoors in a huge pot with miracle grow soil. The plant sits in the window with full sun. It is doing well except that i only get one bloom (rose) at a time. How can i get more blooms on my plant. When i got there was 5 or 6 flowers on it. Thanks, Arlene Mohr
Hi Arlene Well the problem is the amount of light it's getting. Even in a south-facing window, roses of any type, including minis just don't get enough direct sun to produce flowers. Frankly, they do...

8 . Hi I would like to know If it's to late to repot plants? I have several plants that are together in one small pot. Thank You, Brenda
Hi You don't say what kind of plants these are. If they are houseplants, it's probably fine to do it now, although even houseplants prefer to be re-potted in the spring and summer.

9 . I have a bundle of Lucky Bamboo that has always been in the vase of water that it was in when I bought it several years ago. It is getting too top heavy for the vase and I'd like to re-pot it in soil. I'm not sure what type of soil that bamboo should grow in, or should I just move it to a larger vase?
Lucky bamboo is actually a type of dracaena, Dracaena sanderiana, also sometimes called ribbon dracaena. It can quite easily be grown in potting soil. Use a good, reliable all-purpose potting soil. Pl...

10 . I have quite a few african violets, but I have one that the leaves are turning under, toward the main stem. I have tried to repot it, and that hasn't helped. I have had this particular plant for over 10 years. I hasn't grown very much, and I have others that grow out of the pots and hang over the sides. Can you help with this plant. Leslie
Hi I can't be sure what's going on for sure without seeing the plant, but generally when an African violet starts to develop foliage that are stunted or curled under I begin to suspect cyclamen mites...

11 . I have never had my ponytail inside our home. San Antonio, TX is sorta dry but I keep it under the patio and in the winter move it to the front of our home which is facing south. I've been told that I can put the 'tropical' ponytail in the ground, southernmost part of our garden. Do ponytails grow 'children' as does the corn plant? I would protect it in the winter as I do already, when it gets below 36 or so degrees. Stella Pope stellapope@sbcglobal.net
Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is hardy to about 28 degrees F, so as long as you can keep it protected from temperatures other than light frosts, it should be ok. It does well in sandy, well-dra...

12 . I have a beautiful bougainvillea in a hanging basket and I would like to know if I can bring this indoors for the winter and if I can what is the best care I can give it? Also, should I prune it back for the winter? I assume I would water it less and give it as much sunlight I can inside the home. I live in Virginia and I know I can't plant it outside and expect it to live. We have some snow (if we are lucky) but do have below freezing quite a bit.
Hi, Thanks for writing. You can bring bougainvillea inside --- it likes a bright spot. Let the soil dry between waterings --- bougainvillea would rather be too dry than too wet, especially inside. ...

13 . how to start a baby spider plant still attached to the mother plant. my keep dieing
You can start new spider plants by inserting the bottom of the baby spider plant into moist potting soil. (Many times they already have root initials started, so it doesn't take long for them to devel...

14 . My daughter has a Hoya Rope Plant that was orginally my mothers. I gave each one of the girls a section years ago. Only one plant has thrived. I would like to get a cutting from that plant. I don't remember how I went about cutting and can they be rooted in water to start with?
Hi, Thanks for writing. Hoya, or rope plant, roots best from cuttings stuck in moist sand, perlite, vermiculite, or another material that has lots of airflow. They don't typically root well in wate...

15 . I not only need to replant but need to prune a split leaf philadendron I purchased two years ago. It's moved with me two times and I've neglected to do anything more than water it. How do I prune it back since it shoots out feelers and I want to keep it upright and not get too big for my little apartment?
Hi Well these plants can be pretty forgiving about being pruned. You can actually prune them back pretty drastically and they should put out new growth. And, you can root the cuttings you take off th...
