1 . Hi, I have a lot of weeds growing among my cow grass. I have tried spraying weed killers on them but that killed my cow grass as well. After a few months now, I have more weeds coming out. What should I do to get rid of them totally? Regards ..
What type of weeds, and what type of grass do you have? Perennial grassy weeds would need to be killed with a non-selective herbicide that would also kill desirable grasses. You can spot treat the wee...

2 . I planted alyssum a few years ago and it has spread everywhere. It seems the more time I spend pulling it up the more it spreads. How can I get rid of it in my garden? thanks in advance for any help. M
Alyssum does self-seed quite readily. If it has been established in your garden for several years, there likely are many dormant seeds waiting to sprout. A thick layer of mulch may help prevent them f...

3 . Wild clover in my garden comes back faster than I can keep it pulled. It covers most of the garden. I try to pull it before it flowers, but it still comes back in droves. Is there a way to rid of it without harming plants? It is in close proximity to the plants.
What type of clover is this? Is it white clover, red clover, sweet clover, or some other type? White clover spreads readily from seeds and runners. It roots down wherever it touches the soil, so it's ...

4 . Good morning. I live in Central Florida. With sandy soil, I don't worry too much about grass. My problem is what Floridians call Torpedo grass. I can't keep it out of my Butterfly garden. Since I can't spray weeds for fear of killing butterflies/caterpillars, how can I keep this "underground land mine" from popping up almost quickly everywhere? I've put concrete blocks around the pond exterior, laid down landscape cloth, pulled weeds and on the outside of the blocks I have sprayed Roundup. HELP!
Torpedo grass (Panicum repens) is extremely difficult to control. Roundup (glyphosate) is the best solution at this time. Researchers are working on a natural fungus for biological control of it, but ...

5 . I have mostly clay soil and live in Colorado, this year my garden was completely taken over by weeds. I constantly pulled weeds and they came back thicker, choking out my vegtable plants. What can I do, please help.
Hi Well the best way to combat weeds is to never let them set seed so be sure to clear them all away before they mature. Also, tilling the soil sometimes makes things worse because it brings seeds to...

6 . My mom has henbit that is starting to take over her back yard. I read that you can just pull it out and it won't come back. She says she has pulled it out on numerous occasions and it keeps coming back thicker than ever. She's on a fixed income and can't afford a lawn service. Any "simple" solutions?
If henbit is pulled out by the roots, that particular plant won't come back, but it sprouts readily from seeds that may lie dormant in the soil for many years. So new plants sprout in the area where t...

7 . I have a garden bed with edgers, mesh, and lava rocks surrounding the plants. I have grass and weeds growing over the rocks and I was wondering if there was anyway to keep it from growing that wont damage my plants? Also, I had help choosing my plants and I was told they would tolerate the sun well (zone 9). I was told not to water them everyday but some of them started to dry up from the tips. I don't know whether I should/should not be watering? Please help.
Most plants will grow better if they are watered deeply and less frequently rather than just a little bit each day. Deep watering encourages the roots to go deeper into the soil. If the grass and w...

8 . I live in Ct and my lawn is being taken over by crabgrass. I put down fertilizer with weed killer in the spring and fertilizer with crabgrass killer in July. What's with the crabgrass?
Most fertilizers with weed killer contain a herbicide that affects only broadleaf weeds such as dandelions. Applying crabgrass killer in July is too late. Although the crabgrass usually isn't easily s...

9 . Greetings. 1. How can I get rid of the trumpet vine? 2. How can I get rid of the purple creeping wood sorrel weed? Both of these are pests in my front yard. We have removed the sod and have not planted grass nor installed sod yet. We are down to dirt (and have been since last October). We should deal with these pests before grass is added back into the mix. Thank you. Cindi, Spokane Washington
Hi Cindi, Thanks for writing. Trumpet vine is a really difficult one because its root system is so extensive. You'll have the best luck spraying it with a product such as Roundup. Apply the herbici...

10 . What is the best way to get rid of weeds in an established flower garden? I have tried pulling them up, but that "kills" my arthritic knees and weeds just come back.
If the weeds are present in an established flower garden, there isn't any easy way to remove them selectively. Hoeing out the weeds may be easier on your knees and back than pulling them. The best thi...

11 . How do we get rid of the little tan/brown color mushrooms that are popping up in the lawn? I will say that may boyfriend has been trying to keep it watered pretty good to get the green color back, (it was kind of dry mixed in with what green there was in the yard). Thank you, Gayle
Hi Gayle, Thanks for writing. There's not much you can do to stop the mushrooms, I'm afraid --- they're there because there's organic matter in the soil. The good news is that the fungus in your gr...

12 . how do i eliminate moss and prevent future growth between the cracks of a brick walkway? Have tried bleach and a wire brush and it still grows back. Thankyou
Hi There is a good moss elimination product called Wet N Forget and it keeps moss from coming back for a year. You should be able to find it at most garden centers or home stores.

13 . Can anyone tell me about a plant called mullen. I have one in my yard, I like the looks of the plant with it's yellow flower on top, I just don't know anything about it. My friend told me the name of it but nothing else. Is it a good or bad plant to have?
Hi Mullein is a common pasture and roadside weed, but there is also a domestic form grown in perennial borders. Probably the one you have is a wild plant. It really depends on if you like it or not. ...

14 . How can I get rid of thistles and poison ivy in field?
The best option is to spot spray them with glyphosate (RoundUp) when they are actively growing. Glyphosate will kill other plants it comes into contact with, too, so avoid getting it on other plants t...

15 . I have been waging a futile war against Canadian Thistles for about 5 years now. It seems like the more I pull them out the ticker and stronger they come back. I am at my wits end. How do you eliminate them? The roots are long and each appears to be connected to another by deep root systems in the ground. Even spraying with week killer doesn't get rid of them. Please help. I am ready to take out all of my flower beds and just plant grass!
You're right that the Canada thistles are difficult to get rid of. They are interconnected through the rhizomes underground. Your best bet for getting rid of them in an existing flower bed would be to...
