1 . I want to gut my tiny landscaping area infront of my town home. I love mostly green but want to use color too! I'm seeing burning bushes everywhere right now and I love them. I also really love haustus. I need tips on how to keep it simple, easy, inexpensive and also how to make it all fit together with my house (which is tan w/ burgundy shutters and door).
HI Well it's a bit difficult to do any landscaping in this format, but I recommend you go to our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and do an Advanced Search on your needs. It should give you a list ...

2 . Hi, I recently moved to Palm Beach from the Pacific Northwest, and I'm trying to get my arms around this vastly different growing area! Is it possible to grow plants that thrive in zones 3 - 9 in my zone 10? I have quite a bit of shade in my backyard. It gets to be quite humid & hot during the summer - but very few areas get direct sun. thank you!
Plants that thrive in the warmer regions of Zones 3 through 9 may also grow well in southern Florida. As you note, it's the heat and humidity that cause more problems than anything else. Zone 10 in s...

3 . can you dry cat tails and other decorative grasses to use in a tall indoor vase for decorating purposes? If so, how do I do this? Thank You. Lori
Hi Yes, you can. It's really easy, just clip the grass and use it as is. It will dry on it's own in the vase. Cattails are a bit harder because the cattail part will explode sending seeds all over yo...

4 . I live in St. Louis, MO. What plants can I plant in the fall that require little sun?

5 . What do the zones listed for plantings consider ? North Dallas vs. Puget Sound region for example. Alot of plants show both zones, but, rainfall and heat is quite different, N.W. has longer rainy season, Texas rain in downpours spring and fall. Yet, a lot of plants show for both areas. Heat is usually not mentioned. Full sun, parial sun and shade etc. Thanks so much. wanda
Hi The zones of hardiness set up by the USDA are based on minimal winter temperatures, but they should just be used as a broad vision of what will grow in a particular area. For example, I garden in ...

6 . I want to clean up my ornamental feather grass. Should I prune it, thin it, or what?
Hi Well fall pruning is fine, but you won't get to enjoy the feathery flower stalks through the winter. But, if you want, you can prune them back now, but wait until early spring if your plants requi...

7 . I live in Baltimore Maryland. I want to have plants in the garden for the rest of fall and on into the winter. I know nothing about the different names and types plants. I want to know if there are any plants that I can plant now, early November. I also want the plants to last all Holiday seasons, until well after Christmas and New years.
Hi Well in Maryland it's a bit late to be planting any flowers, but you can still plant bulbs (tulips, daffodils, crocus, etc) for spring bloom. You can also still plant deciduous trees and shrubs if...

8 . My new plumeria did not blossom. The leaves still look fine. Do I have to put the pot indoor? Could it be in the (dark) garage:-) or I need to keep the ugly stump inside te house? Thanks, Maria
Hi Well if your area gets below freezing you'll need to get that plant indoors since plumeria is a very tropical plant. It will require a sunny spot. If it goes dormant, you can move it to your garag...

9 . What plants are hardy in the deep South? I live in Montgomery, Alabama and would like to have plants that can withstand frost conditions. Also, are there water plants that can stay out in the winter? I am not a fan of the pansy family - therefore, I would like to find plants that would hold up in containers. Thank you in advance segrestrick@yahoo.com
Montgomery, Alabama is in Zone 8. If you go to our Plant Encyclopedia at http://www.bhg.com/blogs/everydaygardeners/ and click on the Advanced Search option, you can search for the category of plants ...

10 . Can you tell me what is the best way to care for Boston Ferns during the winter? I live in eastern Tn Thank You, Debbie
Boston fern likes moderately bright, but indirect light, slightly cooler than normal room temperature, and high humidity. Most homes are drier during winter, so it helps to group the fern with other p...

11 . The community college in my area is allowing me to plant pink flowers in honor of my best friend and student at that college who committed suicide a few months ago. She was loved gardening and was really good at it. Her favorite color was pink and since I am not too familiar with flower names I am seeking your advice on the kind of pink flowers to suggest. The flowers will be planted on campus. Please help me. My email address is Neiccnicole@yahoo.com I live in Monterey, California. Denise
I am sorry to hear about your friend. What a nice gesture on your part. Memorial plantings are a good way to soothe our sadness and to remember our loved ones. Fortunately, there are many pink flow...

12 . I have just moved to this roof-top apartment (18 stories) with a small planter area of 3mX1m. I love colourful blooms and greens, what do you suggest I plant here? It is very windy here and my planter faces the South.
Hi Well you don't say where you live so we can't give specific recommendations. You can check out our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and do an advanced search on your zone and your needs (annual...

13 . What flowers can I plant in the spring that will thrive in highly acidic (pine trees) soil with low light? I'd like my long driveway to feature some pretty flowers next year.
Hi, Thanks for writing. Azaleas and rhododendrons often thrive in shady conditions with acidic soil; you may be able to get hydrangeas to grow, as well. Both bunchberry and wintergreen love acidic ...

14 . My zip code is 91724. I am in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles (CA) County. Hot, dry summers; low humidity; cool winters with low to moderate rainfall; rarely goes below freezing at night. I am new to caring about gardening and don't know where to start. I only know I need drought resistant, low maintenance plants and love lots of color
Hi You are in zone 8. You can search on plants for zip code by going to our Plant Encyclopedia on this website. Do an Advanced Search with all of your specific details. Also, I suggest touring some l...

15 . MY ASTER GROWS VERY (5 FEET) TALL AND BLOOMS IN LATE SEPT-EARLY OCTOBER, HERE IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. I've tried cutting it back thru June, but I really like the height. It has more blooms than I could ever want. I could easily have a large area of this tall aster, but I have not had luck in containing it. I have staked it with posts and string, but that did not work very well. I have had it planted in the middle of the daylily patch. Can you suggest a better way to contain my tall asters?
Hi I would try a peony ring. Place the ring over the plant when the growth is about 6 inches tall. You can buy peony rings at Gardener's Supply. I'm betting your aster is a New England aster because ...
