Hi Well you can check out our Plant Encyclopedia on this website to find trees that are hardy in your zone. Just do an Advanced Search on the Plant Encyclopedia. As far as finding fruit and nut trees...

2 . when is watermelon ready to pick?
A couple of ways to tell when your watermelon is ready to pick. 1. Look at the bottom of the watermelon, the side that has been laying on the ground. If it is white, it's not ripe. If it is gold or...

3 . 1.I saw some of my neighboors use white powder for their lawns - what is it? 2. My peonie have whitish discoloration on the leaves - how should I treat this? 3. Last spring I plant a fig tree in a planter-should I leave it in the planter over winter time outside or it's better to keep indoor?
Hi Well the white powder you probably saw was your neighbor applying lime to their turf. Lime is not a fertilizer, but an element that helps change the pH of soils from acid to alkaline. Depending on...

4 . I live in Eastern Washington, where Raspberries are a challenge to grow. I have a beautiful raspberry patch. I miricle grow during the season, but was wondering if I need to feed them in the fall.
Hi Do not feed at this time. Let them slow down for the winter. Feeding now will only promote new growth which will die in the winter. I really prefer to fertilize them in the early spring with a dry...

5 . We planted a Mexican lime tree a few years ago in our backyard (zone 9) in Central Florida. We have now had fruit last year and this year, but the bottom branches have lost all their leaves. some of those bare branches even still have fruit. What does it need?
If the bottom branches are being shaded strongly by the upper branches, they may have lost their leaves due to the low light levels. Try pruning out some of the upper branches to let more light into t...

6 . Our plum tree is dropping fruit before it is ripe. We live in a forest in Crestline, CA & are in an extended drought. I have been watering once a month, but do not think this is enough. Thank you for your help. Mary Davidson
Hi, There are several reasons that cause plums to drop fruit early, including: excessive drought; dry conditions that come right after heavy rain or regular watering; insects feeding on developing ...

7 . Some time ago now Graham Ross did a segment on BHG about a flat peach ..they are sometimes sold in the shops now as Donut Peaches....Many,many years ago my father had orchards of them but we always called them China Flats.. Am unable to find anything on this site....can you help please ?
Flat or donut peaches often take more work to grow than regular varieties (more time thinning and harvesting because of their unique shape), but because many varieties of the flattened peaches have ou...

9 . when is the best time to transplant raspberry plants? I live in the midwest, just 40 miles north east of St. Paul, mn
Hi The best time to do this is in the very early spring, just before the plants begin to break dormancy.

10 . i planted grapes and raspberries this spring and i need to know how to winterize them and a trellis i could train them on.
If you planted varieties that are hardy in your area, they should need no special protection over winter. Both would benefit from a 2-4 inch thick layer of mulch over their root zone to prevent altern...

11 . I live in South Carolina and I got a bunch of very tiny black bugs on my plum tree this year. They almost looked like very tiny beetles is the best I could determine. I sprayed the tree with bug killer but it didn't do any good and I didn't get any plums because of the bugs. This is the first time I have seen them but I want to know how to stop them if they come back next year.
Did the black bugs attack the leaves or the fruits themselves? And what type of bug killer did you use to attempt to control them? Most chewing types of insects can be controlled with spinosad, a na...

12 . We live in upstate NY (200 miles north of NYC)where it can get very cold. This past summer we planted strawberries in a strawberry pot w/great success. But how do we winter this? Do we bring it inside or do we leave it outside? Does it need water? We appreciate any help you can offer.
Hi Well the problem you'll have is that your plants are in a container. If they were in the ground, they'd be fine, but they won't do well if you bring them indoors because strawberries need to go do...

13 . We just moved into a foreclosed house and we have two fruit trees: orange and pear. the orange tree seems to be doing pretty well but the pear tree is having problems: The leaves get brown and withered only some of the branches and it produced a bunch of fruit that rotted on the branch--it wasn't ripe yet though but turned brown and fell off. Even ones we picked and brought inside hoping to ripen on the windowseal rotted within a day. What's wrong? blight?
It certainly could be fire blight. Trim off all diseased branches, making the cuts several inches below the lowest sign of disease. Dispose of all the trimmings promptly, including leaves and fruit, b...

14 . The oranges on my tree are rotting before they ripen and I've found worms in them. They are also splitting while on the tree.
None of the common insect pests of citrus are worms that attack the fruit directly. Perhaps the worms that you see are entering through the split fruits, or they may be something uncommon. The Univers...

15 . I received a pineapple plant and not sure how to care for it. It's in a two gallon pot and needs to repoted or planted.
Hi Pineapples are members of the bromeliad family so they like lots of sunlight and water whenever the plant begins to dry out. If you are in a frost-free area, you can plant them outdoors in a sunny...
