1 . I'm wondering if you trim down the tall stems of the Hibiscus or not. They look so dry and dead but I'm afraid if I cut them off they won't come back.
Hardy hibiscus dies to the ground each winter and resprouts from the crown below ground. You can either trim the shoots back in fall after they have defoliated or wait until late winter to trim them b...

2 . My bushes, including my butterfly bush grow very tall(over 5ft)and then flop over. Is there anyway to have them grow more compact and look like bushes.
There are some dwarf butterfly bushes that only reach around 4 feet tall. Look for the word "dwarf" or "petite" in the name. Also, you can use hoop frames (the sort used for peonies or dahlias) or rim...

3 . I have a fern leaf peony that is approximately 7 years old. It is time to divide it. I would like to send my son (who lives in Maryland) a piece of it. So, how do I divide it and then how do I send a piece of it across country?
If your fernleaf peony is large enough it can be divided, although peonies resent being divided frequently. The basic steps in dividing peonies are the same as for other clump-forming perennials. Thos...

4 . Live in western Pa. Planted hollyhocks and butterfly weed seeds a bit too late in the season and they have not bloomed. Our nights are now cold and I want to ensure they will come back next year. Should I let them out there and mulch well or should I bring them inside for the winter before frost? Also the same situation with some foxglove. Bought small plants, but they haven't bloomed. Thanks so much! kmatlak@zoominternet.net
It's normal for hollyhocks and foxglove to not bloom until their second year. And it's not unusual for perennials such as butterfly weed to take a couple years to reach blooming size. None of these pl...

5 . I live in North Dakota. Have two beautiful Russian Sage bushes. Do I cut them back in the fall?
Hi I prefer to leave them alone until spring. That way, you can see what part, if any, of the old plants will have survived over winter. I would wait till you see new growth in the spring and remove...

6 . Hello Just to let you know how wonderful your sight is, I have been on it for the last 4 hrs non stop!!! Thank you very much. I have 2 wisteria plants at the opposite ends of a large garden. 1 of the Wisteria that was growing so well in the Spring and Summer suddenly died mid to late Summer. I did not do anything different. What could the reason be? I was devastated as it was trailing very nicely last year and this year, after taking it's own time to flourish over a couple of years. Thxs Taz
There are no common diseases that attack wisteria that could cause sudden death. They occasionally get crown gall (a tumorlike growth, usually near the soil line, caused by bacteria). So the sudden di...

7 . I need to move my perennial garden. We are in zone 4 and have have a few freezing nights. Can I still replant my perennials before the snow flies.
Hi It's actually best to move them in the early spring, just as they break dormancy.

8 . I recently bought "fall mums" when the flowers are dead I have been cutting them off at an angle is this ok and will it promote more flowers to bloom?
Hi, Thanks for writing. At this point in the season, it's unlikely your mums will be able to put out a second flush of blooms. But they might if you have an especially long, mild fall. ---Justin...

9 . Susan Appleget-Hurst, What is the name of the peony on page 135 of the Sept. issue of Better Homes and Gardens?
Hi Today is Susan's last day at Better Homes and Gardens so I'll answer this for her. That peony is a variety called Fancy Nancy. I discovered several nurseries online that sell it, but the first one...

10 . What could be getting into the center of my plants? It looks like some thing is sitting or sleeping in the center of the plant. Also what keeps digging up my new Butterfly Bush and how can I stop it? Thank You
Hi, Thanks for writing. Without being able to see your plants, I can't say what the critter is laying in them. It could be anything from rabbits to stray cats. There are repellents you can try usin...

11 . Do you cut back the stems?
It's a good idea to cut back the old stems at the end of the growing season. If it doesn't get done in fall, you can do so in spring instead.

12 . I saw a plant. It was small and round to ground with individual "arms" short which looked like a cactus or maybe a sedum. definitely was not a leaf. sort of like the foliage of an ice plant only just spikes. thanks
Hi Sorry, but from this description I can't guess what it is. It sounds like it could be a sedum of some type or perhaps a dianthus. Check the Plant Encyclopedia on this website and look in our Peren...

13 . I want to save the kangaroos paw plant on my patio until next summer. I live in zone 8. What should I do?
Hi, Thanks for writing. Kangaroo paw can be a little tricky to grow indoors --- so it might be easiest just to let the plant go this year and purchase a new one next year. But if you're up to th...

14 . I live in the Northeast and planted 2 foxgloves last spring. My soil is sandy loam.Do i cut them back or bank them like my roses ?
Hi Well with foxgloves it depends on if they bloomed or not. Foxgloves are biennials. This means they grow and produce foliage the first year, bloom the second year and then die. If your plants bloom...

15 . This is the second year since planting Black Eye Susans. They flower great in August, however they develop Black Spots and some leaves turn entirely Black. It doesn't seem to affect the plants, but they don't look that nice. Is there any treatment for this problem? Also we had a lot of rain this year.
Hi Well this is very typical, especially in wet summers. It's basically a form of Rust which is a fungal disease of foliage. You can, if you like, spray the plants with fungicide every week to 10 day...
