1 . Will tilling up my existing yard (crabgrass) and removing it prevent it from returning? My yard is 95% crab grass 5 % mixed bermuda and st. augustine.
Crabgrass is an annual grass that germinates from seed each year. Tilling up your current lawn will get rid of the plants that are there now, but the seeds that are lying dormant in the soil will germ...

2 . I have created an area to grow some plants and I ripped up some sod to do this. However, I am still seeing grass grow through the mulch I have laid down. Is there a way to make sure the grass does not grow but does not kill my hydrangeas?
Hi, Thanks for writing. Unfortunately there's not really an easy way to get rid of the grass other than to pull it by hand. Or you could remove the mulch, spread 8-sheet-thick newspaper over the gr...

3 . I want to gut my tiny landscaping area infront of my town home. I love mostly green but want to use color too! I'm seeing burning bushes everywhere right now and I love them. I also really love haustus. I need tips on how to keep it simple, easy, inexpensive and also how to make it all fit together with my house (which is tan w/ burgundy shutters and door).
HI Well it's a bit difficult to do any landscaping in this format, but I recommend you go to our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and do an Advanced Search on your needs. It should give you a list ...

4 . I have a long faily narrow yard that has been over run by my black lab and several thorn weeds(eg: mostly dirt & patches of grass). I want to lay sod in the spring but dont know how to do so and keep it from being destroyed by the dog. I really need some suggestions.
Hi Well the problem you're going to have is if your dog has free run of your backyard without supervision, you won't be able to have a perfect lawn. Dogs and perfect lawns don't mix. We suggest that ...

5 . What will grow under or near a black walnut tree?
The Morton Arboretum has a good listing of plants either sensitive to or tolerant of black walnut at http://www.mortonarb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=887&Itemid=6

6 . I am planning a windbreak in a berm in zone 6 PA. I have been looking for a good book that tackles this subject and am having a hard time finding one. The berm has 5 moderately sized maples with split rail fencing in between them. I would like to use a variety of conifers and some red twig dogwood and a winterberry or two. Is there a book that any of you know of that would give me info on sturdy and ornamental conifers that are good for a windbreak situation?
Penn State University has an extension publication on windbreaks that you should find helpful. It is free and downloadable at: http://pubs.cas.psu.edu/FreePubs/pdfs/uh172.pdf

7 . What plants could I use to replace the dying conifers between my garage and sidewalk? The area is about 4 feet across & receives full sun. I live in Charlotte, NC where we've had drought conditions for the last few years.
Hi This is a very hard question to answer in this format because we can't see your property or have photos of it. I suggest you check out our Plant Encyclopedia on this website and do an ADVANCED sea...

8 . my dog is blonde ,rugs are beige. i have used weed cloth covered by pine needles to cover the under planted area of dirt which is very red soil here in NC, but there seems to be a lot of earwigs. is there any other good ground cover material that spiders and earwigs don't like that i can use over the weed netting that my dog would be safe running on and that bugs don't like like pebbles?
Any organic mulch will provide darkness and moisture, elements that are attractive as hiding places for earwigs and spiders. Pebbles may dry out a bit faster, but they, too, will have dark crevices th...

9 . We live in Germany and have wooden garden shed in our back yard. After returning this summer from vacation to the US, we discovered a fine red powder had covered everything in our shed. We assumed a neighbor that had been doing some remodeling had been cutting roof tiles outside our shed (they are red here) and that the dust had leaked in through ventilation vents. We then cleaned EVERYTHING. All was fine for a few months but now red rust-like powder has covered everything again. Any ideas???
Hi Sorry, you have me stumped on this one. Do you see any rust on your lawn or plants. Rust, in the plant world, shows itself as a fine dust on turf grass so if your lawn is infected maybe it has blo...

10 . I have a huge backyard and along the fenceline is just dirt right now. I wanted to start planting some nice rose and plants. What are some ideas that are cost effective?
Hi Well the sky is the limit as far as what you could do along a fenceline. You could do a perennial border, you could plant a flowering shrub border, you could just plant it to evergreens, or you co...

11 . My name is Amy,and my husband and I redid our front yard. We built a flower bed under a bay window. We live in high desert,Albuquerque, New Mexico,87123, My question is what kind of flower that will be the best choice for now to plant, and how should I design this flower bed. one thing for sure is that we dont' want tall plants. because we don't want them to block the view. we want colorful plants. Thank you! Amy
Hi Amy, Thanks for writing. There's a large range of colorful, easy-to-grow plants (including many beautiful salvias and penstemons) that thrive in your area. Search for varieties you like with our...

12 . what would you suggest for a low cost privacy screen starting over the 6ft fence without taking up room into the yard. we live in 11758 zip code. we have 100' across back and about 40' down each side thank you Darlene
Hi Well the first plant that comes to mind is Emerald Green arborvitae. It's hardy, looks great in all seasons, eventually grows to 12 feet tall and barely gets more than 3 feet in diameter at the ba...

13 . I saw what looked as though it was a bowling ball with about a 4" wide piece of bent metal in a half circle that the bowl rested on. It was then stuck in the ground and added quite a lovely look in a garden. I can't find it no matter what area I search for it. (I know, I forgot to bookmark it!) Hope you can locate it and tell me where it is in your wonderful website. Thank you. Holly McNamara
Hi Can you help me out a bit here? Where do you think you saw this piece of art? Was it in Better Homes and Gardens or one of our Special Garden Publications? We publish hundreds of pages of garden e...

14 . I have lived in my house for two years by now i thought i would have it all together, but i cannot figure what to do with my front porch/garden. i have added perrenials with mulch they died and the dog has been eating the mulch so now it's just mulch. Basically i have on each side of my front door an encased garden (2x6). My house is prone to having frogs which i do not like so i would like something where critters do not come but it looks nice as well. can you please help me with this.
Hi Well it's almost impossible to offer specific landscaping advice without photos and in a forum such as this. I would suggest you check out our Garden Plans section on this website to see if any of...

15 . What is the procedure to add single bricks on either side of a flagstone-in-cement walkway to widen the walkway? Do I dig out the sides and just place the bricks in the dirt or do I need to put sand on the soil or do I have to use cement? Thanks for any suggestions.
Hi Well you'll have to dig out the area on each side to a depth equal to the size of the brick when laying flat, plus, an inch or two of coarse sand underneath the brick. You'll need to level the ex...
