3 . Is it normal for hinoki cypress leaves to turn brown in the fall?the tree has been thriving for 5 years. We moved it to a different spot in the yard about two months ago and now we are noticing this browning process.Did we just not notice this happening in past years?
Hi These plants don't normally brown in the fall. If you just moved it two months ago, it's more likely that the plant has suffered some setback from the move. All you can do is keep it mulched and l...

4 . I am getting a garden ready for winter and I would like to know if I could use the leaves from our trees as winter mulch. I want to cover the garden with the leaves and then till it under and let it sit all winter then when spring gets here till it up again before planting. Thank you for your time and help.
The process that you describe is called sheet composting. And yes, it does work. Typically you can add several inches of leaves. If you add too many, they won't till in or decompose well.

5 . for the past few years my olive trees produce nice big olives that look fine green but as they start to ripen and turn black the are deformed and have holes in them that are caused by some kind of a worm. when left in water for a few days the worms come out of course and look like small maggots or white worms about 3/8s of an inch. it makes me sick to have to through away all of my olives.that's not easy for a greek to do. lol. what can i do to stop this.
The worms that you are seeing are the larvae of the olive fruit fly. This serious pest of olives can be active year round. The University of California has an excellent online publication about how to...

6 . I am planning a windbreak in a berm in zone 6 PA. I have been looking for a good book that tackles this subject and am having a hard time finding one. The berm has 5 moderately sized maples with split rail fencing in between them. I would like to use a variety of conifers and some red twig dogwood and a winterberry or two. Is there a book that any of you know of that would give me info on sturdy and ornamental conifers that are good for a windbreak situation?
Penn State University has an extension publication on windbreaks that you should find helpful. It is free and downloadable at: http://pubs.cas.psu.edu/FreePubs/pdfs/uh172.pdf

7 . I never before had a little garden until this year. I don't know if or I should prune it. I only remember the first part of the name of the plant. It's a dusty (something). I grew them with my flowers. They grow in part shade and part sun. Do you know the name.
Well there is an annual plant called Dusty Miller. Could that be the plant you are talking about? It has finely cut silver-gray leaves. This is an annual plant and it will die back with the first fros...

8 . I live in zone 4 and would like to plant a burning bush in a sunny spot with another plant or plants. Do you have any suggestions for perennials that would look nice next to a burning bush?
Throughout most of the summer when the burning bush is solid green, almost any perennial that grows well in sun would work well with it. If you're looking for something that blooms in fall when the bu...

9 . I would like to plant upright evergreens in two large pots on my patio. Do you have suggestions on what evergreens do well in pots (18 inch square)? Potting suggestions - like drainage?
Hi Well your pots will need good drainage to begin with. In your climate the only evergreen that can withstand cold temps in pots is the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. Plus, what's nice is that these plants d...

10 . I noticed that my 3 year Hydrangea plat looks bad the leaves are looking brown to black wilted and curling it is facing south it gets sun but I live in the pacific northwest is there anything I can do?
Hi, Thanks for writing. Without being able to see your hydrangea in person, I can't say for certain what's wrong with it. I do know that they're very susceptible to a number of leaf diseases. If it...

11 . MY NEIGHBOR'S JACARANDA TREE HAS GROWN INTO OUR YARD AND TOWARDS THE FOUNDATION AND BACKYARD PATIO. WE HAVE CUT ALL ROOTS FROM THE TREE, HOWEVER, WE HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF ROOTS GROWING EVERY WHERE. WHAT DO WE DO TO KILL THESE ROOTS QUICKLY? AND, SINCE THEY HAVE BEEN CUT FROM THE TREE WILL THEY STILL GROW AFTER BEING COVERED WITH SOIL AND ROCK? THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE. BETTY
Hi These roots should not sprout once they have been cut from the mother tree. Now, the only real way to get rid of them is to dig and chop them. You can cover them with soil and mulch, too. They sho...

12 . I have a maple that was snapped off by the wind. All is left is a trunk about 12 inches high. There are shoots coming off the remaining trunk. Should I just dig it up or will it be okay like it is? Thank you in advance for the info. Penny
Hi Well your tree will probably come back, but it will grow from those sideshoots and may never form a single leader trunk again. The tree will probably survive and grow like this, but it may be a lo...

13 . I have some very large roots in my yard. They seem to pushing themselves out of the ground. I have 5 different kinds of trees in that area, so I don't know which ones have the roots showing. Is there anything I can do to get them back in the ground where they belong?
Some types of trees have a strong tendency to develop surface roots, and there is little that you can do about it. In other cases, it might be an indication that your soil is compacted and the roots c...

14 . It is called a DIPLADENA
This is a tropical vine that's actually part of the mandevilla family. I'm not sure though, what your question is. The name diplademia can be used equally with mandevilla.

15 . I have planted a butterfly bush & weigla shrubs this year. I live right outside chicago and am not sure what to do to as far as making sure my new plantings are ready for the winter. Do I prune the butterfly bush? These shrubs were planted in the spring.
Hi All you need to do is leave them alone and possibly mulch around them with some straw, leaves or mulch. Keep in mind the weigela should be fine since they are very tough shrubs in your climate, bu...
