1 . What could be getting into the center of my plants? It looks like some thing is sitting or sleeping in the center of the plant. Also what keeps digging up my new Butterfly Bush and how can I stop it? Thank You
Hi, Thanks for writing. Without being able to see your plants, I can't say what the critter is laying in them. It could be anything from rabbits to stray cats. There are repellents you can try usin...

2 . Hi there! We live in southeastern AZ, about 10 miles from the Mexican border. Our soil is caliche, very clay like. We live in a rural area which is considered free range which means the cattle can come right up to the house and in the yard and often do! Are there any plants or shrubs which the cows may not like? Oleander does well here, they eat the fuzzy cholla cacti believe it or not! Any help or ideas are appreciated.
There is little research on cattle-resistant plants, but because they are closely related to deer, it's a good bet that plants deer avoid will also work well for cattle. The University of Arizona has ...

3 . I looking over your regions and they deer resistant plants, I don't see a listing for the Southeast. Only listing was for Florida to Texas, that's a little different than Eastern North Carolina.
I recommend that you look over the South region and the Midwest region, and choose the plants that will survive in your USDA Hardiness Zone. You have many to pick from. I also recommend asking your co...

4 . how to keep the neighbors cats from defecating in my garden.
There are several commercially available animal repellents that are designed to repel cats (and dogs). Both Messina and Liquid Fence make cat repellents that can be sprayed in the area that the neighb...

5 . They are cutting our pecans off dropping them to the ground while green now, before that they cut off any fruit off our trees. What can we do to discourage them from this?
Hi, Thanks for writing. I'm sorry, but I don't have any good solution for dealing with squirrels. There are a number repellents you can try spraying; some gardeners have good luck with them and oth...

6 . What can we do to stop the birds and rabbits from eating our melon plants? (watermelon/honeydew/canalope)
Hi Well this can be difficult. The only surefire method of keeping rabbits at bay is with a chicken wire fence around the garden that's at least 3 feet high and buried a foot under the ground. Birds ...

7 . Are Murray Cypress deer resistant? thanks
Murray Cypress is a type of Leyland cypress, which can occasionally be severely damaged by deer.

8 . What can we use to rid white flies on vegetables plants but not harm the plants or have it be toxic to new growth vegetables (mostly the cucumber/bean/pea and spinach plants)?
Hi You can buy sticky traps that are yellow in color (yellow attracts white flies). When the flies land on the yellow card, they get stuck to it. You can buy organic products like this from Gardens A...

9 . I thought that squirrels would be my only potential problem when wanting to attract birds with seed/feeders. My first seed purchase was safflower (sp) seeds because I had been told that birds would love it and squirrels (which I have and love having) would not like it. No one at any time warned me about rats and that is what I drew instead of birds. It was horrible. They ate through the plastic seed container and climbed the shepard's pole 3 at a time to eat the seeds. I have given away the seed
Rats are not something we hear a lot about as birdfeeding pests. Squirrels and starlings, yes. (I am overrun with chipmunks this year, getting in my feeders.) Have you tried putting up squirrel baf...

10 . I have alot of critters in my back yard! What bulbs could I plant that would keep them away from my flowers? I have planted tulips and holly hocks but they eat them down to the stalks. I have deer, wild turkey, woodchucks, and squirrels in my back yard. This area gets full sun and has moist soil. Thanks for your help.
Hi The best bulbs to plant in a situation like this are daffodils. These bulbs are poisonous to critters so they won't touch them. Your site sounds perfect for daffodils, too as long as it doesn't st...

11 . Do animals in particular)Deer feast on Variegated Liriope?
Liriope is not usually bothered by deer, so it is a good choice to use as a groundcover in deer-infested areas.

12 . It appears that we have a nest of agressive bees in some sort of ground nest, under or in a bed if ivy. One of the bees stung me on the face and the others buzzed angrily. The bees are black and yellow. What are they? What is the best method to get rid of them? Yikes! Thanks, Patti O'Donoghue
Hi I bet these aren't bees, but yellow jacket wasps which nest in the ground and are easily upset at this time of year. The best way to combat them is with a wasp spray. If you know where their next ...

Various rodents could be getting to your ripening tomatoes. Squirrels, chipmunks, rats, voles, or mice could be causing this type of damage. Depending on the scale of your planting, you have several ...

14 . I live in southern Missouri. Every year we get bombarded with Japanese Beetles which attack our shrubs and flowers. Do you have a list of perennial flowers and shrubs that those pesky bugs don't like? Thanks!
Some plants resistant to Japanese beetle include lilac, forsythia, dogwood, ginkgo, holly, and tamarisk.

15 . I found entry area, unscreened vent on room addition, near top overhang or roof eaves. The squirrels are knawing holes in ceiling. No crawl space in that area of attic. How do I get them out, so that I can replace vent screen? Please help! Thank you. Sincerely, Cindy Vallerga seacatlady@att.net
Hi I would suggest live trapping them. You can buy a live trap at most garden centers. Bait it with peanut butter and you should be able to remove the animals so you can plug the holes. Remember, the...
