Tulip tree

Liriodendron tulipfera

Tulip tree

Native to North America, tulip tree is an outstanding shade tree that has a pyramidal shape and large trunk. The plant earned its common name because the leaves, which develop fine yellow autumn color, are shaped like tulip flowers. Tulip tree's blooms are yellow green in color and appear in early summer. While they're attractive, they're not particularly showy as they tend to blend in with the foliage.

Tulip tree does best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil and doesn't like particularly hot, dry spots.
