Avens

Showy, brightly colored flowers are saucer-shape, sometimes semidouble, over loose mounds of handsome dark strawberrylike leaves. Many of the best cultivars are hybrids between species. These plants do best in a well-drained, rich soil.

Plant It With
Basket-of-gold

Brilliant yellow basket-of-gold planted in front of bright avens makes a bold color combination. Both enjoy similar soil conditions.

Iris

The upright sword-shape foliage of Siberian iris provides a good foil for the basal scalloped leaves of avens. Strong blue irises play off well against strong yellow or orange avens.

Calliopsis

Brilliant yellow coreopsis echoes or complements the bright hues of avens over a long bloom time. Several fine cultivars are available.
