Garden fertilizer rates

I live in zone 4 in Minnesota and would like to plant a vegetable garden. What analysis of fertilizer would you recomend and at what rate? My soil is black.

Hi, If you have rich soil  you may not need to fertilize at all. I would, however, always add organic matter such as rotted manure, compost, leaf mold, etc. If you want to fertilize, I would suggest you use a dry, granular slow-release fertilizer that will feed your plants as they need it. One example is Osmocote. You can buy any slow-release fertilzer at Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot or an independent garden center. Look for a formula designed for vegetable gardens.
