Don’t feel bad. I would be the first to admit I don’t follow my own advice on this, which is to start with my own attitude about clutter. I tend to wait until I can’t take it anymore before digging in and doing something about the problem. Maybe you’re to that point now.
One strong motivator is to look at what others have done. You can do that easily by clicking through our slide show on closet organization. The first suggestion is to consider installing a closet system. I second that. It used to be that wire was the only thing available, but now you will find some very nice wood and laminate units.
An closet organizing system is only as good as how you use it, of course. Once you’ve selected a flexible unit – one with both full-length hanging space and double rods for shirts and pants – arrange your closet contents so that the most frequently used items are most accessible. Closet cubbies and drawers are great, too. The best strategy is to arrange what you have in a way that’s most convenient for you. That’s advice you can live with.
