There are two other ways to bring out nuts’ rich, concentrated flavor without toasting them in the oven. One way you can keep your eye on the nuts is to toast them in a skillet. To do so, just place the nuts in a single layer in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Stir the nuts or shake them back and forth in the pan for 5 to 6 minutes or until they are golden brown and fragrant.
The microwave offers another alternative. Place ½ cup nuts in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate and toast them on high for 3 to 5 minutes. Be sure to check the nuts’ progress at 3 minutes and use additional time only if needed.
