Can grass mulch cause Cucumbers to die back?
In Aug.& Sept. 2009 and 2010 my cucumbers died back. I used dried grass for mulch. Could the mulch have caused this problem? 2009 had normal weather, 2010 had quite warm temps and rather dry. I did water the plants both years. It was the fisrst time I used Grass mulch. They were planted in differnt areas both years. Thank you. demunckr@aol.com

It's unlikely that a thin layer of dried grass mulch would cause disease problems in your cucumbers. A thick layer of grass mulch could lead to rotting, but a thin layer should be no problem. It's more likely that your cucumbers suffered from something else such as cucumber wilt, a disease which is spread by cucumber beetles.
