Replacing a lawn with flowers and shrubs
I just removed an old lawn and want to make it a cottage type garden, what do I need to do as the next step? I live in Alameda, California. Do I need to use a soil sterilizer or can I just start planting?

Thanks for writing. If the lawn is fully removed, you can begin planting. Before you plant, though, is the perfect time to amend your soil with organic matter, such as compost. It will help your soil drain better when it's west and help your soil hold moisture better when it's dry.
