How to hide a gas meter and improve a very small front yard
Hello, I am hoping you can answer my question. We live in Palmyra,Pa. The houses here have very tiny front yards. (Ours is 36' wide by 110" deep)My problem is there is now a gas meter right in front of my porch. I was wondering if you would have any ideas on how to hide this meter. I would love to have seasonal interest and make my front yard stand out from the others on the block. All the plans you have on line is for really great front yards. Not something like the ones here in our town.

Thanks for writing. Without being able to see your yard in person I can't give you any specific planting ideas, but in general, I've seen ornamental grasses used to great effect to hide gas meters and other utilities. They're beautiful during the winter and can easily be pushed aside so they don't prevent utility workers from accessing the meters.

As far as planting ideas, if our garden plans don't work as a whole, don't be afraid to customize them by ignoring sections of them. For example, if there's a plan you like but it's too big, feel free to simply ignore part of it so that it does fit. Or, you can also link together different plans by planting them against one another so they feel like they're a part of the same bed.

Have you seen our collection of small garden plans? Maybe there's something there?
