planted mums last fall and this year they came back big and bushey. should I have cut them back in the spring.

Mums should be pinched (just the shoot tips) back once or twice in late spring/early summer (no later than early July) to encourage them to grow bushier and more compact, and delay bloom until late summer or fall. I think you're too late now to cut them back. You'd probably get a lot less bloom if you did that this late.
