Should we create a deep planter around our flowering dogwood?
We live in SW Virginia and have a flowering dogwood tree in our yard that is about 15 ft tall with a trunk circumferance of about 10-12 inches. My husband and I want to put a wine barrel around the trunk to create a flower bed for soapwart to spill over. He is concerned that this might kill our tree by suffocating it's trunk. The barrel is about 15-18 inches deep. Should we do this or not? Neither of us want to lose the dogwood, as it is a beuatiful tree. Thank you!

Do not do this. It will kill the tree. The trunk should never be covered in soil.
