Watering newly planted trees and shrubs
I have in the last 6 wks planted two plum trees about 6 to 8 ft tall, two peony bushes about 18 in. tall and various perennial shrubs recommended for this area. My question is: what kind of watering schedule is recommended for the container grown trees and shrubs I have planted? As you may know, summers here are hot and dry and we have high winds. I have been careful to follow planting instructions.

Hi Jean Michel,
Thanks for writing. I can't really give you a schedule because it depends on your soil, the weather, etc. But I can say it's best to keep the soil moist, but not wet. That may mean watering daily or every other day when it's particularly hot and windy, but only every two or three days on more mild days, for example. I'd feel the soil around your plants --- if it's nice and moist, you shouldn't need to water. If it's starting to dry out, then I'd water it again.
