maple tree roots in lawn
I live in Zone 4/5 in the middle of Utah. I have a large silver maple growing in the middle of my backyard lawn. The roots of the maple make mowing difficult. I considered a brick edge with a bark mulch over the roots, but the bricks won't sit on the roots. I considered one of those rubber mulch rings, but the diameter of the trunk is easily 18 inches. Any ideas? Thank you so much, Julia Cousins

Julia, mulch is probably the right approach. You just need to think on a bigger scale. Try a layer of mulch that extends 6 or 8 feet (or whatever distance is  needed) from the trunk. There, you'll probably have good soil in which to imbed a brick edging to hold the mulch in place.
