Hi,

Late spring and early summer are the best time to prune lilacs without affecting the way they'll bloom next year.

As far as what to prune, it's best to remove no more than one-third of the plant's total amount of leaves in one year. Most experts recommend removing a few of the oldest shoots every year; that allows the lilac to send up strong, healthy new shoots.
