pruning newly planted crape myrtle
I just planted (2) Natchez crape myrtles. They are about 3' tall. I would like to prune them to clean them up and I would like them to grow more like a standard and not bushy at the bottom. Should I wait to prune since I have just planted them or is it okay to prune now? In general is it okay to prune plants or trees when first planted or should I wait a while for them to get established? Thanks!

Well cape myrtles rarely require pruning and aren't fond of it when it happens. I would only prune them in the early spring before the plant breaks dormancy. Certainly, you can remove dead or wild branches at any time, but for a more thorough pruning, I'd wait until they are dormant.
